Apparently, Santa Cruz’s Jeff Kendall is good luck for the San Jose Earthquakes.

Kendall, the CEO of NHS Inc./Santa Cruz Skateboards, fired the ceremonial siren before the start of the team’s Major League Soccer match, and the Earthquakes won 3-2 over FC Dallas at PayPal Park on Wednesday night to snap a five-match winless streak.

Hernán López scored his second goal of the night for San Jose (6-23-3) in the 89th minute, and teammate Jeremy Ebobisse added an insurance goal in the 93rd minute to put the Quakes up 3-1.

López scored his first goal in the 14th minute for a 1-0 lead.

The Quakes, who have two games left in the regular season, plays their home finale against Real Salt Lake (14-7-11) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The start time for the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division contest pitting defending CIF Division 4-A state champion Palma (3-2, 0-1) at 2023 CIF 4-AA state champ Soquel (2-2, 0-0) on Friday has been moved up from 7:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. to better accommodate the Knights’ homecoming dance.

It’s the division opener for the Knights. Palma lost to defending Gabilan champion Salinas 39-25 in its opener last week.

Girls volleyball

At Watsonville 3, Gonzales 2 >> Senior Daisy Cornejo had 18 kills, 20 digs, and four aces, and the Wildcatz rallied for a 24-26, 25-11, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11 win in the teams’ PCAL Mission Division match Wednesday.

Senior Danika Hernandez had 12 kills, three aces, and two blocks for the Wildcatz. Junior Sofia Murillo made 35 assists and served five aces, and senior Leslie Renteria made 28 digs

Watsonville (9-3, 5-1) hosts Monterey (13-7, 6-0) on Friday at 6 p.m.

Girls flag football

Aptos 19, Scotts Valley 14 >> Ella Porter threw a pair of touchdown passes to Ellie Marta in the Mariners’ SCCAL win over the Falcons at Soquel on Wednesday.

Izzy Graff recorded seven tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown. Marta also recorded an interception.

Aptos (10-4) hosts Los Gatos on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Soquel 31, Santa Cruz 16 >> Dahlia Montesinos ran for a touchdown and threw a TD pass to Leah Serna in the Cardinals’ SCCAL loss to the Knights on Wednesday.

Charlotte Gill caught a pair of two-point conversions for Santa Cruz.

Watsonville 18, at King City 16 >> Stephanie Martinez, Isa Alvarez, and Aliah Anaya caught touchdown passes from Fernanda Lazo in the Wildcatz’s PCAL Gabilan Division win Wednesday.

The Wildcatz (3-12, 2-5) host Everett Alvarez on Monday at 6:15 p.m.

Women’s golf

Bulldog Fall Invitational >> UC Santa Cruz’s Adeline Truong tied for 12th with a 7-over-par 151 total at the Bulldog Fall Invitational, which concluded Wednesday at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon in Beaumont.

George Fox’s Liana Brown shot an 8-under 136 total to earn medalist honors. Pomona-Pitzer won the eight-team event with a score of 3-over 579 total. UCSC (652) took seventh.

Banana Slugs Samantha Shaw (161) and Olivia Lew (161) tied for 31st. Alyssa Castellanos (179) took 43rd and also scored.

UCSC competes in the Sneak Peek at Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo, Texas, on Nov. 1-2.

Girls tennis

Monte Vista Christian 6, at St. Francis 1 >> Sofia Moore and Cloe Morrow won singles matches, and the unbeaten Mustangs swept doubles action in their PCAL Cypress Division win Tuesday.

Siena Liddicoat and Sophia Sheridan, and Alexa Contreras and Shaeleen Koch won doubles matches for the Mustangs (6-2, 6-0).

St. Francis’ Annie Edelmaier won in a tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. The short-handed Sharks (3-5, 3-3) defaulted at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Girls golf

At Aptos 159, SLV 188 >> Emily Fassio shot 36 for medalist honors over six holes and led the Mariners to the SCCAL win at Seascape Golf Club on Tuesday.

Lemi Anastasopoulos (37), Adeline Burgess (40), and Lilly McGee (46) also scored for the Mariners (3-1).

Reagan Atkinson (39), Ella Cook (48), Sammy Shults (50), and Lainey Weikel (51) scored for the Cougars.

Aptos hosts Harbor at Seascape on Thursday . Aptos is 3-1 in league play.
