Kylian Mbappé is finally a Real Madrid player.
Madrid said on Monday it reached a deal with the France star for the next five seasons, bringing together one of soccer’s top talents and its most successful club.
Madrid did not release any financial details. It also didn’t immediately say when it will officially introduce Mbappé, who is with France preparing for the European Championship.
The announcement came after years of flirtation by Madrid with the player who inherited the status of the best in the game from Lionel Messi.
“A dream come true,” Mbappé said on X. “So happy and proud to join the club of my dream. Nobody can understand how excited I am right now. Can’t wait to see you, Madridistas (Madrid fans), and thanks for your unbelievable support. ¡Hala Madrid!”
The post, with the message written in English, Spanish and French, was accompanied by photos of a young Mbappé wearing a Madrid jacket while visiting the club. One photo was with Madrid great Cristiano Ronaldo.
The club also posted a video on its website showing Mbappé highlights. At the beginning, a voiceover says, “Are you watching closely?”
The 25-year-old World Cup winner joins a Madrid team that is already loaded with talent and still celebrating its latest European triumph — and sixth in 10 seasons.
Just two days ago, Madrid won a record-extending 15th European Cup title when it beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the Champions League final in London.
Mbappé joins a team that already features young stars in Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham.
North Carolina eliminates defending champion LSU
Alex Madera drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning with a two-out single after LSU tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and No. 4 national seed North Carolina beat LSU 4-3, winning the Chapel Hill Regional and knocking the defending champion Tigers out of the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina (45-14) will play West Virginia in a best-of-three super regional matchup.
Also, Evansville earned its first NCAA regional title, bouncing back from a 13-run loss to East Carolina on Sunday to beat the No. 16 Pirates 6-5 on their home field in Greenville, North Carolina, on Monday.
Also locking up regional victories on Monday were Florida, Oregon State and UConn.
Scott loses playoff for U.S. Open spot
Adam Scott ended his longest day in golf with a playoff loss against Cam Davis in a U.S. Open qualifier at Columbus, Ohio, and now Scott has to wait a week to see if his alternate status will allow him to extend the longest active streak of playing the majors.
Davis gave his fellow Australian a second chance by making bogey on the final hole in the Springfield, Ohio, qualifier, sending them to a playoff for the fourth and final spot. Scott chipped in for birdie and Davis matched him with an 18-foot birdie putt. Both made par on the next hole, and then Davis hit his approach to 2 feet and Scott couldn’t match the birdie.
Scott, who has played in every major starting with the 2001 British Open, can still get to Pinehurst No. 2 for the U.S. Open on June 13-16. The USGA has held back six spots in case there are late qualifiers through the world ranking.
LIV Golf players had a rough time at five of the qualifying sites. Only two of the 17 players from the Saudi-funded league reached the U.S. Open — Dean Burmester in Florida, and David Puig in San Francisco.
Matt Kuchar led five qualifiers in Florida. He will join Phil Mickelson as the only players to compete in every U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 (1999, 2005, 2014).
• Miles Russell, the 15-year-old from Florida who became the youngest player in Korn Ferry Tour history to make a cut, has accepted a sponsor exemption to make his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Rickie Fowler will try to defend his Rocket Mortgage Classic title at the Detroit Golf Club starting June 27.
Russell shot a 5-under 66 in April at the Lecom Suncoast Classic in Longwood, Florida, to make the cut on the PGA Tour’s developmental circuit. He was the American Junior Golf Association player of the year in 2023, which included his seven-shot win in the Junior PGA Championship and becoming the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship.
Russell is expected to return to the Detroit area in July to compete at the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club. Earlier this year, the left-hander nearly qualified for a PGA Tour event before losing in a playoff in a Monday qualifier for the Puerto Rico Open.
Guan Tianlang of China is the youngest to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. He was 14 when he made the cut in the 2013 Masters, playing as the Asia-Pacific Amateur champion.
Ducks signs goalie Clara
The Ducks have signed prospect goalie Damian Clara to a three-year, entry-level contract, per a news release from the team. Clara, a 6-foot-6 player who the Ducks selected in the second round of last year’s draft (60th overall), climbed the draft board and has only seen his stock rise since last summer.
The 19-year-old was named the second-tier Swedish pro league Allsvenskan’s top junior player, an award known as the “Golden Grid,” which was captured previously by another Ducks netminding prospect, Calle Clang, as well as former Ducks center and 2023 Stanley Cup champion William Karlsson.
In 2023-24, his numbers went from a 2.23 GAA and .913 save percentage in the regular season (25-8-0 record) to 1.68 and .931 in the postseason. There, he went 10-1-0 and won the Allsvenskan championship with Brynäs IF, the same club with which recently retired Jakob Silfverberg won a Swedish Hockey League (top division) in 2012.

Atlanta United fires coach
Atlanta United fired coach Gonzalo Pined, less than 24 hours after another loss dropped the team farther from playoff contention in Major League Soccer.
The team announced the change coming off a 3-2 home setback to Charlotte before more than 61,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
United managed only one victory — a surprising 3-1 road triumph over Lionel Messi and MLS-leading Inter Miami last week — in its final 11 games with Pineda on the sideline. The team is 1-6-4 over that span, dropping to 13th in the Eastern Conference and 24th overall in MLS.
Assistant coach Rob Valentino will take over as interim coach while Atlanta conducts the search for Pineda’s successor.
• Basketball Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning has told ESPN that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had his prostate removed earlier this year.
Mourning, now an executive with the Miami Heat, said his prostate was removed in March and that he is now cancer-free.
He told ESPN that he intends to now be an advocate for men to get regular blood tests as part of their screening for prostate issues.
The American Cancer Society says prostate cancer is the second-most common type of cancer among men, after skin cancer. Prostate cancer will be the cause of death in about 1 in every 44 men, the group said.
Mourning had a kidney transplant in 2003, then returned to the NBA and helped the Heat win a championship in 2006.
