MONTEREY >> The historic Western Flyer will return to the Gulf of California this spring, marking 85 years since the famous expedition with John Steinbeck, Ed Ricketts and their crew.

Local scientists, educators and conservationists will team up to study the Gulf of California’s ecosystems, exchange knowledge and brainstorm new ideas to protect the marine world.

The expedition starts at 3 p.m. March 16, departing from Old Fisherman’s Wharf. The send-off celebration will mark nearly 85 year to the day since the now-famous journey that inspired the book ‘Sea of Cortez.’

The expedition will honor the vessel’s legacy while advancing marine research, education and conservation. The Western Flyer Foundation will also be partnering with local organizations to host public events throughout California and Mexico.

For three months, the Western Flyer will retrace its historic route, making stops along the California coast and throughout the Gulf of California.

The crew onboard will host public events, hands-on education and scientific research while engaging with people interested in the ocean and stories of researchers.

Some of the highlights in the expedition include:

• Monterey Send-Off Weekend (March 15-16): A ticketed event at the Stanton Center on Saturday, followed by a public send-off celebration at Old Fisherman’s Wharf on Sunday.

• Return to the Gulf of California Welcome Celebration in La Paz (April 13)

• Western Flyer Welcome Celebration in Santa Rosalia (April 22)

• Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival (June 13-14)

There are several other stops in communities across California and Mexico, featuring boat tours, presentations and local gatherings. Full event details and updates can be found at www.westernflyer.org/baja2025.
