CLEARWATER, Fla. >> It was thought by Tigers watchers that an outfielder might be on front-office chief Scott Harris’ shopping list ahead of Thursday and Opening Day against the Dodgers at Los Angeles.
A source confirmed to The Detroit News a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that nine-season MLB outfielder Manuel Margot is headed to the Tigers, pending a physical, after being released by the Brewers.
Margot, 30, and a right-handed hitter, has played for the Twins, Rays, and Padres. His career big-league numbers: .254 batting average, .307 on-base percentage, .380 slugging, for a .686 OPS, with 56 home runs.
The Tigers have been hunting for outfield help as center fielder Parker Meadows continues to miss time — another month, minimally — because of a nerve issue in his right (throwing) arm.
Margot has a career WAR of 11.5 in 917 big-league games, including 542 appearances in center field. He has strong career numbers against left-handed pitching: .279/.338/.415/.753.
Should, in fact, Margot be en route to the Tigers, it seemingly would endanger the roster quest of Jahmai Jones, a right-handed hitter and minor-league free agent signed by the Tigers in November.
Jones, principally, has been viewed as a spare outfielder, although he has worked at third base.
The Tigers on Sunday were wrapping up their Grapefruit League season against the Phillies at Clearwater.
They were to fly afterward to San Francisco for a pair of preseason games ahead of Opening Day at Dodger Stadium.
