Resident of Moraga Dick, a long-time resident of Moraga, died on Saturday, June 7, at the age of 90. Born inLas Vegas, he moved frequently as a boy as his father followed available work during the Great Depression. Consequently, as an adult, Dick was determined to provide stability for his family, living the last 56 years in the same Moraga home, where he and his wife raised their children.
Dick was a proud graduate of Stanford University, where he earned a degree in engineering. After serving in the United States Army in West Germany, he returned to the Bay Area and worked in management for Bethlehem Steel and Kaiser Permanente. His was a life dedicated to serving and supporting others.
He was active in St. Monica’s Catholic Church and in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and coached numerous youth sports teams. A self-taught chef, indicative of his skill and artistry, he mastered everything from baking to barbeque, from paella to pastries. His holiday pies remain legendary.
Enduring memories center around the meals he made and shared; they brought people together in beautiful, meaningful ways. Dick enjoyed a long retirement, cooking, enjoying his family, and cheering on his favorite teams. He was a long-time season ticket holder to his beloved Giants, 49ers, St. Mary’s basketball, and Stanford football and loved attending games with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Finally, along with his gentle kindness, Dick had a wonderful sense of humor, and his witty jokes enlivened a room.
He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Eleanor, and children William Vaughn (Kim), Mary Bordenave (Mike), Robert Vaughn (Lauren), and Joseph Vaughn. He is also survived by grandchildren William, Andrew, Ryan, and Sarah Vaughn and Andy, Dan, and Elyse Bordenave, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Bonnie Johnson. For those who wish to honor Dick's memory, the family suggests making a donation to Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area, 101 Town and Country Drive, Danville or RES Success, 704 Main Street, Martinez.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 24, at 10:15 a.m. at St. Monica’s Church in Moraga.
