Detroit >> It may have technically been an off day for the Tigers Thursday, but the trainers’ room inside the clubhouse at Comerica Park had the feel of a MASH unit as several wounded players came in for tests and treatment.

And it turned out to be a productive day, all things considered, since the prognosis on starting pitchers Jack Flaherty (back) and Kenta Maeda (abs) and reliever Alex Faedo (hip) was largely positive.

“We’ll see how it goes through the weekend,” manager AJ Hinch said. “In regard to Jack and Kenta, time is on our side. We aren’t under any pressure to make a decision. We will see how they feel day to day and today was encouraging.”

Both threw off flat ground before the game. Maeda, who faced two batters before being pulled from his start Wednesday in Texas, also did long toss.

“Everything felt great today,” Maeda said through interpreter Daichi Sekizaki. “It’s not completely gone, not like 100%, but it’s to the point where I can make pitches. Based on how I felt today, throwing-wise, I think I can go.”

If the Tigers keep the rotation intact after the off day Monday, Maeda’s next start would be Wednesday against the Nationals.

“I just need to take care of my body until that next start,” Maeda said. “I’m thankful AJ pulled me out early and not risk anything further. I think, if anything, his decision made it possible for me to get to the next one.”

At the time, though, Maeda resisted giving Hinch the ball, campaigning to stay in the game longer.

“I only made two pitches and I thought I could still pitch,” he said. “I didn’t want to cause too much trouble for our bullpen. But I am glad he took me out.”

Flaherty, who came out of the game last Tuesday after five scoreless innings against the Rangers, would make his next start Tuesday.

“The catch play went well today,” Flaherty said. “We’ll see how it bounces back tomorrow. Just stay the course. I feel way better than I did the last couple of days.”

He continues to take treatment on the back daily.

“Just continue to loosen everything up,” he said. “Everything feels looser now, just have to make sure nothing is hindered and I’m not moving differently.”

As for Faedo, who is on the injured list, he ran and did some pregame (non-throwing) work Friday.

“The good news on him is that he can continue to do some things and not have a total shutdown,” Hinch said. “He’s got a little more prolonged absence just because of being on the IL. But yesterday was a good day.

“I always love it when the player is optimistic. But they have to put the work in. We will have to see some things before we can commit to (them making their next start).”
