OAKLAND — A confrontation Tuesday afternoon near Oakland City Hall left two men shot and both later arrested, authorities said.

Both men — one 51 and the other 28 — were in stable condition. Both are Oakland residents and know each other, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the edge of the Oakland City Hall plaza near the intersection of 14th Street and Broadway, authorities said.

Initial reports were that the 51-year-old man was with a group of other people that was approached by the 28-year-old man, authorities said. There was some kind of confrontation that ended with the 51-year-old man hitting the 28-year-old man with a chair, authorities said.

The 28-year-old man then allegedly pulled a gun and shot the 51-year-old man in the abdomen, authorities said.

As the 28-year-old man was trying to run away, he was shot in the leg by another person, authorities said. That shooter is still being sought.

Both men shot were taken by ambulance to a hospital.

They were both placed under arrest at the hospital, the 28-year-old man on suspicion of assault with a firearm and the 51-year-old man on suspicion of assault with a weapon other than a firearm, authorities said.

Police have not yet offered a potential motive for the confrontation.
