Senior attacker Kat Fanni scored the game-winning goal with six seconds left, and Santa Cruz High’s girls water polo team overcame a five-goal deficit to beat visiting Leigh of San Jose 8-7 on Saturday.

Junior center Violet Rubin scored four goals, drew four ejections, and had four steals. Senior captain and center defender Giulia D’Souza had two goals, three steals, and she assisted on the game-tying goal.

Senior Daphne Olson had a goal and an assist, drew an ejection, and made five steals. Senior Malia Cooper had two steals, sophomore Tessa Jefferies had an assist and a steal, and senior Amalia Terrazas added a steal.

Sophomore goalie Sage Steller-Croll continued her strong start to the season. She held Leigh to a pair of goals over the final three quarters and finished with 10 saves, two assists, and a steal.

Boys water polo

Steve Martin Memorial >> Soquel went 3-1 and finished fourth at the Steve Martin Memorial, held Friday and Saturday at Soquel and Harbor.

The Knights edged C.K. McClatchy 12-11 in double overtime and routed Palo Alto 21-5 on Saturday, and stomped Willow Glen 18-3 and lost to Los Altos 12-9 on Friday.

Senior Josh Novic scored the game-winning goal against McClatchy.

Knights senior Cash Wolf totaled 19 goals and five steals in the tournament. Junior Stryder Stelck had 11 goals and four steals, freshman Jake Martinez had six goals, five assists, and eight steals, and sophomore Cane Mitchell had four goals and 11 assists.

Senior goalie Jacob Henshaw made 45 saves, seven assists, and five steals over four games.

Soquel (5-3) plays at Los Gatos on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Girls cross country

Fighting Knights Joust >> Watsonville’s Katelynn Ruiz took first place in the senior race at the third annual Fighting Knights Joust at Crystal Springs on Saturday. She completed the 2.95-mile course in 19:01.9.

The Wildcatz’s Lizbeth Gomez Abrica (21:22.2) took eighth place in the the 2.95-mile junior race.

Monte Vista Christian’s Finley Castro (14:04.7) took fourth place and Watsonville’s Aileen Reyes (15:00.5) took 10th in the 2.13-mile sophomore race. Evergreen Valley’s Sivani Kaliki (13:34.5) took first.

MVC’s Anna Conca (14:05.2) took fourth in the 2.13-mile freshmen race. Leigh’s Riley Schenone (13:44.6) took first.

Boys cross country

Fighting Knights Joust >> MVC senior Justin McCullick took 10th in the senior race at the third annual Fighting Knights Joust at Crystal Springs on Saturday. He completed the 2.95-mile course in 17:06.7. Leigh senior Andrew Hamamoto won in 16:09.1.

MVC’s Gavin Beckmen (16:47.1) took fifth and teammate Conor Gilliam (17:04.1) was eighth in the 2.95-mile junior race. Leigh’s Dylan Olmos (16:36.2) took first.

Watsonville’s Nain Garcia-Ferria (11:32.6) took third in the 2.13-mile sophomore race. Leigh’s Timothy Sandholm (11:19.7) took first.

Women’s soccer

UC Santa Cruz 1, at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1 >> Sydney Boyd scored on a pass from Camille Anneet in the 27th minute, but the Banana Slugs gave up the equalizer in the 49th minute of their draw in Claremont on Saturday.

Goalie Ainsley Gove made five saves for the Banana Slugs (2-2-3), who play Pacific Union (1-3-0) in Angwin on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

Cal Lutheran Invite >> UCSC were the victims of a pair of sweeps Cal Lutheran Invite in Thousand Oaks on Saturday. The Banana Slugs lost 25-17, 25-17, 25-9 to East Texas Baptist and 28-26, 25-16, 25-20 to Cal Lutheran.

UCSC’s Olly Gordon had seven kills and three blocks against East Texas Baptist. Margo Melgoza had 14 assists, and Anna Hospodar made nine digs.

The Banana Slugs’ Ashley Magley had eight kills against Cal Lutheran. Melgoza had 14 assists, and Kate Lau made 12 digs.

UCSC (6-7) plays at Haverford (6-4) in Pennsylvania on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Cabrillo Tri No. 2 >> The host Seahawks lost 25-16, 25-16, 25-22 to Sacramento City and 25-14, 25-14, 25-23 to Coalinga at the Cabrillo Tri No. 2 in Aptos on Saturday.

Cabrillo (4-9) plays in the College of San Mateo Quad on Wednesday. It takes on Solano at 2 p.m. and Los Medanos at 4:30 p.m.

Men’s cross country

Stump Invitational >> Junior Benthan Vu (26:03.6) took 19th out of 36 runners at the 8k Stump Invitational in Davis on Saturday.

UC Davis junior Ethan Brooks took first in 16:52.3 and led the Aggies to the team title with a score of 16. The Banana Slugs took fourth with a score of 91.

Santa Clara freshman James Ponzio, a MVC alum, took 31st in 26:37.7.

Women’s cross country

Stump Invitational >> Freshman Rosey Harris (19:27.2) took 42nd out of 67 runners to lead UCSC at the 5k Stump Invitational in Davis on Saturday.

UC Davis junior Maddie Kackley took first in 16:52.3 and led the Aggies to the team title with a score of 15. The Banana Slugs took sixth with a score of 156.

Men’s water polo

Delta Tourney >> Cabrillo dropped two more games and finished 0-4 at the two-day San Joaquin Delta Tournament in Stockton on Saturday. The Seahawks lost 15-11 to Las Positas and 16-6 to Ohlone.

The Seahawks’ Aiden Howard and Nolan Nguyen each scored four goals on the day. Joe Brennan scored three goals, and Ayden Reed and Josh Retzlaff each scored twice.

“We’ve come a long way and we have a long way to go,” Howard said.

Cabrillo (0-6) plays at Ohlone in Fremont on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
