A Detroit man who was mistakenly shot by his sister during a fight was arraigned Tuesday on multiple charges relating to the shooting that also left two men dead and one other injured outside of an Eastpointe sporting goods store over the weekend.

Dejuan Taylor, 21, was charged in the 38th Eastpointe District Court on one count of tampering with evidence, a 10-year felony, and other crimes. Judge Kathleen Galen set bond at $250,000 cash/surety.

His 19-year-old sister, who police say fired the gunshots, surrendered to authorities on Sunday. She has yet to be charged.

“This was a senseless act of violence,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a news release.

The incident took place about 2:50 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of a Foot Locker store on East Eight Mile and Kelly roads.

According to prosecutors, Dejuan Taylor and sister arrived at the store where they were confronted by another group of individuals. The two sides knew each other, police said.

An argument took place between the two groups as they stood in the parking lot, Eastpointe police and prosecutors said.

Investigators said Taylor began fighting with the group, which included a person armed with a gun. As this was going on, his sister retrieved her handgun from the vehicle and started shooting while people were fighting, according to police.

“Taylor was soon overpowered, and on the ground while the group continued to pummel him,” prosecutors said in the release. “Taylor’s sister ran back to get her gun and then allegedly fired upon the group, killing two and injuring one from the group, along with injuring Taylor.”

He then got back to his feet, allegedly took the gun and some magazines on the ground from one of the injured people, and fled the scene with his sister.

The weapon and ammunition were considered evidence in the case, resulting in the criminal charge for tampering with evidence.

In total, four people were shot, including Dejuan Taylor. One died at the scene and two others were transported to area hospitals, where another one later died.

The names of the two deceased have not been made public.

Taylor is also charged with firearm larceny and carrying a concealed weapon, both felonies punishable by up to five years in prison, and larceny less than $200, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

Detective Lt. Alexander Holish said police were still working to determine a motive in incident.

Court files do not list an attorney for Taylor.

Robert Leonetti, a spokesperson for the county prosecutor’s office, said charges against other individuals involved in this matter are pending. He said Taylor’s sister remains in custody.

Taylor is being held in the Macomb County Jail. If he is released on bond, he must be fitted with a steel-cuff GPS tether, Leonetti said.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for May 20 and a preliminary exam will follow on May 27.
