The La Puente football team appears to have a soft schedule this season, but it’s still worth noting how the team is taking care of business with authority.

La Puente’s most impressive win came Friday against Ganesha, as it won 39-7 to run its perfect record to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Miramonte League.

Junior Aaron Silva could not be stopped, rushing 30 times for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Ezekeil Zamora threw for 137 yards and a TD, and also rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns.

Ganesha had just beaten previously undefeated Duarte 34-31 a week earlier, so the Warriors deserve some credit for all of their blowouts.

La Puente is allowing just over seven points a game and winning by an average margin of 41 points. Their closest game was a 42-14 nonleague rout of Rosemead.

The most impressive stat may be that the Warriors have not allowed any points in the second half of its games this season.

“Our defense has been doing an incredible job all year,” La Puente first-year coach Erick Morales said. “We tend to get a little backlash because of our strength of schedule, but our coaches are doing a great job with these kids and putting them in the right positions. And we’re just playing with a lot of toughness and passion.”

Senior middle linebacker Diego Sandoval is a part of the defensive toughness along with two players named Angel Martinez. There is the Angel Martinez nicknamed “Doey,” who plays defensive end, and the other Angel Martinez who plays middle linebacker.

There is also receiver/cornerback Ivan Lopez, who had two interceptions in Friday’s win.

Morales was the offensive coordinator on last year’s Warriors team that finished 8-3 and lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 14 playoffs to Bell Gardens, which wound up winning the D14 title.

It was in that game the Warriors lost Zamora early due to injury, and the game got away from them after a promising start.

“Our guys finally got a taste of what playoff football feels like, and they’ loved that taste and want some more,” Morales said. “We have a bunch of players back from that team that are hungry, and we’re playing with a chip on our shoulder.”

None more probably than Zamora, who has been the team’s starting QB since his freshman season.

Now a junior, he has thrown for 1,409 yards and 19 touchdowns this season and rushed for six scores.

He is the reigning Miramonte League MVP and was named to the CIF-SS Division 14 team last year.

“He’s very motivated,” Morales said of Zamora. “He comes in week in and week out and fires the guys up. He’s been working with a quarterbacks coach and you can see the improvement this year has been incredible. His reads and his confidence are carrying us, it’s fun to see.”

La Puente is off to its best start since going 9-0 in 2011 and losing the Montview League championship game to Azusa. The Wariors haven’t won a league title since sharing the title in 2012.

The Warriors could finish the regular season 10-0, but there is still a ways to go.

The Warriors travel to Bassett (2-5, 1-1) on Friday followed by games against Garey (3-4, 1-1) and a league finale against Duarte (6-1, 1-1).

“We like this new league (with six teams),” Morales said. “I think we’re (trending) toward the Division 13 playoffs, and teams like Ganesha, Garey and Duarte will test us. But I like our chances. We’re locked in and we all have a common goal to keep this thing going.”
