Del Rio leaves Wisconsin following OWI arrest

MADISON, Wis.>> Former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio stepped down Monday from his role on Wisconsin’s coaching staff after he was arrested near campus for operating a vehicle while intoxicated last week.

Del Rio, the former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders and defensive coordinator for the Broncos, had joined Wisconsin’s staff in August as a senior adviser to head coach Luke Fickell.

Madison police said Del Rio was arrested early Friday for a first-offense OWI after a vehicle hit a stop sign and broke a fence before resting in a yard. Police said Del Rio was walking away from the area and showed signs of impairment when they arrived at 12:35 a.m.

Rays’ Franco arrested in armed altercation

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic>> Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who awaits trial in a sexual abuse case, was arrested for his involvement in an armed altercation in the Dominican Republic, police said.

Meregirdo Espinosa, a Dominican police spokesman, told AP the altercation happened in a parking lot in San Juan de la Maguana, a city located 116 miles west of Santo Domingo. Another man and a woman were also detained, and two firearms were seized, police said. Espinosa said one of the guns presumably belonged to Franco, who was allegedly fighting with the other man over the woman’s attention.

MVP finalists announced

NEW YORK>> Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is a finalist for his first National League MVP award after winning the AL honor twice, joined among the top three in NL voting by New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte.

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge was named a finalist for his second American League MVP in three seasons, joined by Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and Yankees outfielder Juan Soto.

Miami hires ex-Dodgers coach as 17th manager

MIAMI>> The Miami Marlins hired Los Angeles Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough as the club’s 17th manager. McCullough, 44, was hired by the Dodgers in 2015 as their minor league field coordinator and had been the first-base coach on Dave Roberts’ staff since the 2021 season.

Seahawks waive starting linebacker Dodson

The Seattle Seahawks waived linebacker and leading tackler Tyrel Dodson in a shake-up of their struggling defense. Dodson started all nine games this season for Seattle, seven at middle linebacker and the past two games on the weak side after the team traded for middle linebacker Ernest Jones IV.

Boxer dies after collapsing after IBO title fight

WELLINGTON, New Zealand>> Fiji boxer Ubayd Haider died more than two weeks after collapsing at the end of an IBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title fight against Australia-based Chinese boxer Runqi Zhou. The 25-year-old had been in a coma in the Lautoka Aspen Hospital since the fight in Nadi, Fiji on Oct. 26.
