Ike’s Love & Sandwiches — located at 212 F St., Suite B in Davis — is a sandwich shop offering a unique selection of sandwich combinations for all.

General Manager Melinda Velazquez explains that the sandwich place was founded by Ike Shehadeh, who first opened a small sandwich place in San Francisco called Ike’s Place in 2007.

“I know Ike himself actually went to UC Davis and he has created some of the sandwiches here in Davis. His first store was in San Francisco and he just actually opened up his 100th store there and when he started growing, he really wanted a store here in Davis since he has ties to the city,” said Velazquez.

Velazquez has been working at this location for about two and a half years and has also worked at other locations.

“I really like the sandwiches, how they’re so diverse, how they fit people like for their needs,” she shared. “We do gluten-free sandwiches for people with food allergies. We do vegetarian sandwiches. We also do vegan sandwiches, and then, of course, we do like the crazy names or how he creates sandwiches and people, and then they go based on that.”

Velazquez also explains that Ike creates a unique selection of sandwiches based on experiences and people. She mentions that every employee also gets to create their own sandwich.“We get to create our own sandwich and then have it on the menu. I know a few people that have been working here for five years that have their own sandwich,” she says.

One thing that Ike’s is known for is its “dirty sauce” that goes on the sandwiches. Velazquez explains that they make the sauce in-store, which is similar to a garlic aioli.

She also talks about how the sandwiches can range from very simple, like turkey and cheese, to a crazier combination like their Kryptonite sandwich, which includes onion rings, jalapeno poppers, cheese sticks, turkey, salami, bacon, pastrami, roast beef, avocado, and more.

The most ordered sandwich is the “Matt Cain,” which has roast beef, turkey, salami, Godfather sauce and provolone. Another famous sandwich is the “Madison Bumgarner,” which has rib eye steak, yellow barbeque sauce, (light) habanero and American pepper jack cheese.

Another favorite is the “Menage a Trois,” which has halal chicken, real honey, honey mustard, barbeque sauce, pepper jack, Swiss, and cheddar cheese.

The shop also offers sandwiches exclusive to Davis, including the “Yolo (County),” “Room 107,” and “Picnic Day,” all of which include a special Aggie sauce.

The sandwich shop has a big social media presence around the area, with videos of sandwiches popping up everywhere. Velazquez says that a few months back, they worked with My Davis to create videos of them making different sandwiches to post.

Velazquez invites all to come enjoy a sandwich at Ike’s as there is something for everyone. She explains that all employees are trained on the allergen lists and on taking close precautions for any food accommodations.

Ike’s Love and Sandwiches is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers a student and faculty discount from 3 p.m. to close for sandwiches at $8.98 with a valid form of I.D. Ike’s also offers catering “for all Ike-able events.”
