As part of its “Every Day Counts” student attendance campaign, Woodland Joint Unified School District recognized the top three schools with the most improved student attendance for May 2025.

The schools were Whitehead Elementary School, Beamer Elementary School, and Douglass Middle School. Each winning school received an “Every Day Counts” banner to display and will have a DJ play at their school as a prize.

Whitehead Elementary School Principal Alison Evert said her school community has made student attendance a shared priority.

“We’ve worked hard to build a school culture where every student feels welcome, supported, and excited to come to school,” Principal Evert said. “This recognition is a reflection of our students, families, and staff all coming together to make every day count.”

Beamer Elementary School Principal Hortencia Hernandez celebrated the collective effort of her students, staff, and families.

“At Beamer, we know that showing up every day is key to helping our students grow and succeed,” Principal Hernandez said. “We’re proud of our students and families for committing to consistent attendance, and we’re excited to keep the momentum going next year.”

Douglass Middle School Principal Cristina Morel said the school has been intentional about engaging students and emphasizing the importance of daily attendance.

“We’ve been focusing on positive relationships and making school a place students want to be,” Principal Morel said. “This recognition shows that our efforts are paying off, and we’re incredibly proud of our students for stepping up.”

Research shows that missing just two days a month of school can impact a student’s academic success, while coming to school each day improves academics, boosts self-esteem, and increases opportunities for college and a career.

WJUSD originally launched the campaign in January 2023 to improve student attendance districtwide. Each month, the district recognizes the top schools with the most improved attendance, and also adds an “Every Day Counts” poster contest.

Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin praised the schools for their focus on student well-being and academic growth.

“What a great way to end the school year,” Ortega-Lampkin said. “We are proud of our schools for creating supportive environments that encourage students to show up and thrive. When students attend school every day, they’re building the foundation for lifelong success.”
