“I have met so many friends that have become family from this program. This program has taught me so much more than theatre, and I’m so thankful for this,” says Brooklyn Wroblewski, a sophomore at L’Anse Creuse High School North.
Abigail Messing, a junior at HSN, echoes this sentiment: “This has really changed my high school career for the better. The people, the environment, and the class combined have truly felt so safe for all three years I’ve been in the program. Making friends and finding a sense of belonging is so easy because everyone is there to do what they love and bring their all every day.”
A transformative experience and rich history
What high school program could inspire such enthusiasm among its students? The Pankow Performing Arts (PPA) theatre program is a vibrant community that offers students not only the chance to learn about theatre but also to grow personally and socially.
Established as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at the Pankow Center, the PPA aims to equip students with practical skills and experiences in the performing arts.
Initially starting with a small cohort, the program has expanded significantly, now incorporating various facets of theatre production, including lighting, sound, costumes, scenery, stage management, directing, and playwriting.
Collaborations with local professional and university theatre companies enhance students’ experiences, providing valuable professional development opportunities.
Scholarships and recognition
The PPA is also a registered troupe with the International Thespian Society, the High School Theatre Honor Society. Through various service projects, senior Thespian students have collectively been awarded over $1,000,000 in scholarships, with three seniors alone receiving over $630,000 last year based on their theatrical skills.
The importance of theatre education
Theatre plays a crucial role in high school education by offering students a pathway for self-expression. It allows them to explore diverse emotions and experiences, ultimately fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and others. This artistic experimentation is essential for personal development, boosting confidence and self-esteem.
Skills for life
Beyond personal growth, theatre encourages collaboration and teamwork while enhancing critical thinking and creativity. The skills gained in the PPA program extend far beyond the stage, equipping students for success in various careers, from law to education to medicine.
The experiences students gain on and behind the stage prepare them for challenges in any professional arena.
Through the Pankow Performing Arts theatre program, students find not just a love for the arts but also a supportive community and invaluable life skills that will serve them well into the future.
