“Devastated” Musgrove needs Tommy John surgery, will miss NLDS

LOS ANGELES>> Joe Musgrove needs Tommy John surgery and won’t pitch for the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander has an ulnar collateral ligament injury.

A.J. Preller, the Padres president of baseball operations, announced the injury Friday. The Padres open the NLDS on Saturday in Los Angeles. Musgrove left Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series with elbow tightness. He had been pitching through discomfort for a couple of weeks.

The 31-year-old right-hander had been on the injured list from late May through mid-August with various elbow issues. Musgrove is revered by Padres fans for throwing the first no-hitter in franchise history in 2021.

Hall of Famer and former Bills star Shaw dead at 85

CANTON, Ohio>> Former Georgia Tech and Buffalo Bills star Billy Shaw has died at age 85 at his home in Georgia.

Shaw was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Shaw chose to play for the Bills of the old American Football League rather than the Dallas Cowboys of the then-rival National Football League because he wanted to play offensive guard rather than linebacker.

He won two AFL titles in Buffalo and made eight All-Star teams during his nine-year career.

Businessman convicted of cheating ex-star Howard out of millions in scam

NEW YORK>> A Georgia businessman has been convicted of cheating former NBA stars Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons of $8 million after a trial in Manhattan federal court.

The jury returned its verdict on Friday against Calvin Darden Jr. The conviction has led a prosecutor to call for the immediate jailing of Darden on the grounds that it was the third time that he had been convicted of a fraud involving millions of dollars.

Aces guard Hayes named Sixth Person of the Year

LAS VEGAS>> Aces guard Tiffany Hayes has earned the WNBA Sixth Person of the Year award. Hayes received 38 of 67 votes from a national media panel.

New York’s Leonie Fiebich finished second with 21 votes. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough of Washington and Marina Mabrey of Connecticut were the next two in the voting.

It’s the fifth time in the past six seasons that a Las Vegas player has won the award. In her 12th WNBA season and first with the Aces, Hayes played in 33 of Las Vegas’ 40 regular-season games, coming off the bench a career-high 28 times and starting five games.

Detroit’s Campbell enters player assistance program

NEW YORK>> Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jack Campbell has entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. The league and union announced Friday that Campbell will be away from the Red Wings organization indefinitely while he receives care. Campbell may return to practices and games when cleared by program administrators.

The 32-year-old was expected to begin the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Detroit signed him for the league-minimum $775,000 after the Edmonton Oilers bought out the three seasons remaining on his five-year, $25 million contract last summer.
