



Scarlet Stateler and Alexa Castaneda each had two goals and an assist, and Aptos High’s girls soccer team recorded its 10th shutout with its 9-0 win over visiting Santa Cruz on Tuesday.
Isabella Hartnett scored twice for the Mariners (14-2-1, 8-0-1), who earned their third straight Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title. Hartnett increased her team leading goal total to 19 on the season.
Emily Santiago also scored, and Gigi Zuniga had three assists.
The Mariners opened scoring in the 17th minute and tacked on three more goals over the next 13 minutes.
Aptos benefitted from an own goal by Santa Cruz that came on a cross from Stateler in the second half.
Goalkeeper Evelyn Pini made four saves for the Mariners, who are ranked No. 11 in the Central Coast Section and No. 106 in the state by maxpreps.com.
In the teams’ regular-season finales on Thursday at 7 p.m., Aptos hosts Harbor (1-13-1, 1-7-1), while Santa Cruz (5-8-3, 3-4-2) hosts San Lorenzo Valley (2-10-1, 1-6-1)
At Soquel 2, Harbor 1 >> The playoff-bound Knights scored in each half and pulled out the win in SCCAL play Tuesday.
Soquel secured second place in league and an automatic berth to the CCS playoffs with their victory.
Harbor’s Ava Bibighaus scored an Olimpico goal from the corner kick spot.
Soquel’s Isis Tumanson scored on a pass from Ashlyn Brady in the first half. Isela Gonzalez intercepted a goal kick from Harbor in the second half and scored the decisive goal.
Goalie Athena Forbus made 19 saves for the Pirates (1-13-1, 1-7-1), who close their season at Aptos (14-2-1, 8-0-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Soquel (11-4-2, 6-2-1) closes SCCAL play at Scotts Valley (7-5-5, 4-3-2) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
At Monte Vista Christian 4, Carmel 0 >> Sophomore striker Tea Knowles scored three goals, and the Mustangs celebrated their senior day match in Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division action on Tuesday.
Sophomore winger Riley Ruter also scored.
Freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Groves made three saves for the Mustangs (5-9-3, 3-6-1), who play at North Monterey County (12-4-3, 5-3-3) in Castroville on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
Pacific Collegiate 3, Alisal 1 >> Anna Walker-Edwards scored in the 57th and 71st minutes to cap the Pumas’ rally and help them leapfrog the Trojans into second place in the PCAL Mission Division at Santa Cruz High on Tuesday.
Alisal scored first on corner kick. PCS knotted the score at 1-all in the 32nd minute, when Eva Ramirez-Truse scored off pass from Elia Mas.
Kate Lane also recorded an assist for the Pumas, who honored their three seniors, Walker-Edwards, Ramirez-Truse and Chloe Woelfel, at the outset of the match.Goalie Hailey Woelfel made four saves for PCS.
PCS (7-6-2, 5-3-2) plays at Carmel (5-7-5, 4-3-3) to close the regular season on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Scotts Valley 1, at SLV 1 >> Naomi Sifton scored on a penalty kick for the Cougars in the 50th minute to help forge a draw in their SCCAL match on Tuesday.
Senior Lia Lock scored on a pass from junior Izzy Morairty in the 45th minute for the Falcons (7-5-5, 4-3-2).
Falcons goalie Jazzy Phillips made eight saves, and Cougars goalie Cheyenne Casey made four saves.
On Thursday, Scotts Valley hosts Soquel at 3:30 p.m., and SLV (2-10-1, 1-6-1) plays at Santa Cruz at 7 p.m.
Men’s basketball
UC Santa Cruz 64, at Academy of Art 60 >> Caden Breznikar made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds and Joe Espy sealed the Banana Slugs’ win with a pair of free throws with no time on the clock at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco on Tuesday.
Espy, a junior forward/center, finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Banana Slugs (11-12), who trailed 35-31 at the half. Senior guard Zino Okah scored 16 points and surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone. Breznikar, a junior wing, finished with nine points and six rebounds.
Senior forward Quintin Metcalf scored 13 points for the Urban Knights (14-8), and senior forward Isaiah Williams had 12 points, four steals, and three blocks.
UCSC hosts Simpson (11-12) at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Girls basketball
MVC 50, at Carmel 48 >> Senior Sophia Cortes scored a career-high 30 points, and the Mustangs won their PCAL Mission Division road game Tuesday.
MVC led from start to finish, with its biggest lead being eight points.
Cortes made two free throws to put the Mustangs (7-16, 3-8) up by four points with eight seconds left. Carmel made a jumper before time expired.
“This was a total group effort all across the board,” Mustangs coach Zach Nelson said.
Senior Amya Tellez has eight points and seven rebounds for the Mustangs. Sophomore Emily Madison pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
MVC hosts Pacific Grove (17-5, 10-0) in their regular-season finale on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Watsonville 55, at Monterey 31 >> Freshman Isabella Alvarez had 22 points and three steals in the Wildcatz’s PCAL Gabilan Division win on Tuesday.
Junior Stephanie Martinez had 14 points and four steals for the Wildcatz (18-5, 8-3). Junior Leilani Yasin had six points, 17 rebounds, and three blocks.
Watsonville hosts Alisal (14-8, 6-4) to close the regular-season on Thursday at 7 p.m.
At St. Francis 65, Santa Catalina 9 >> Freshman guard Liliana Whitmeyer with 21 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals in the unbeaten Sharks’ PCAL Cypress Division game Tuesday.
Sophomore guard Maya Calfee had 15 points, nine assists, eight steals, and five rebounds for the Sharks (22-2, 13-0). Maeve Flynn had eight points, two rebounds, and two steals.
St. Francis hosts PCS (12-9, 7-5) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
King City 56, at Pajaro Valley 23 >> The Grizzlies, playing their second game without junior forward and leading scorer Olivia Contreras, suffered the loss in PCAL Cypress Division play Tuesday.
Junior Monique Ayala scored 11 points for the Grizzlies (4-17, 2-10).
Sophomore Katia Slama scored a game-high14 points for the Mustangs (10-13, 9-4). Senior guard/post Amity Hearne added 12 points.
The Grizzlies play at Palma (19-3, 10-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Boys basketball
Greenfield 70, at PCS 25 >> Garrett Koontz had nine points and eight rebounds in the Pumas’ PCAL Cypress Division loss at Kaiser Permanente Area on Tuesday.
PCs missed several open shots and committed 20 turnovers.
Son-Mai Clark added six points for the Pumas, and Ian Bulfin had seven rebounds.
PCS (4-14, 1-10) plays at league champion St. Francis (20-3, 11-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
College baseball
San Joaquin Delta 13, at Cabrillo 8 >> Catcher Kaiden Hoapili had two hits and four RBI in the Seahawks’ nonconference loss Tuesday.
Second baseman Adrian Castaneda had a walk, two hits, one RBI, and scored twice for the Seahawks (2-5).
Brett Graddy gave up an unearned run over 1 2/3 innings of relief and earned the win. Starter Oscar Knapp was tagged for seven runs over 4 2/3 innings and took the loss.
Cabrillo plays San Joaquin Delta (6-4) at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Women’s basketball
At Simpson 65, UCSC 56 >> Junior wing/center Jenna Gorton had 14 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in the Banana Slugs’ loss in Redding on Tuesday.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Jackson had 12 points and five rebounds for the Banana Slugs (7-16), who trailed 34-26 at the half. Freshman forward Claire Galbo had eight points and six rebounds.
Junior guard Zara Dumatol had a season-high 22 points and six assists for the Red Hawks (14-7). Senior forward Tessa Kinney had 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
UCSC hosts California Tribal College (12-5) of Sacramento at the West Field House on Saturday at 1 p.m.
