



SALINAS >> Aptos High’s softball team earned its first win in the Central Coast Section playoffs since 2019 with its upset of host Alisal on Saturday.
Sophomore Kalina Healy had two hits, including a triple, three RBI, and scored a run, and the No. 7 seed Mariners used a six-run outburst in the third inning to storm past No. 2 Alisal 8-1 in the Division III quarterfinals.
“It was a great team win,” Mariners coach Phil Rojas said. “I thought the girls brought their ‘A’ game today. With five days to prepare, it can get a little tiring with end of school coming up.”
The Mariners (16-7 overall), the runner-up to Scotts Valley in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, face No. 6 Ann Sobrato (11-10) of Morgan Hill in the semifinals at Hollister High on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The Bulldogs, the fourth-place finisher in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mount Hamilton Division, slipped past Prospect 2-0 on Saturday.
Aptos finished with 11 hits, but didn’t draw a walk. Senior Lilly McGee hit two doubles and scored twice for the Mariners. Senior Kailani Aguayo had a triple, two RBI, and scored a run, and sophomore Emma Burgueno had two hits and scored a run.
Senior Bailey Fulton and freshman Gwen Vaca each had a hit and run scored. Senior Makenzie Lashley had a hit and one RBI, and sophomore Nova Neu scored a run.
“The win was very rewarding because it’s nice to get that CCS win for our seniors, who were a big part of today’s offense and letting the underclassmen know what it’s all about,” Rojas said.
Nevaeh Lopez had two hits and one RBI for the No. 2 Trojans (18-7), who shared second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Mission League.
Sophomore Mya Najera-White earned the complete-game win. She gave up nine hits, four walks, and one earned run, while striking out four batters.
Lopez took the complete-game loss. She also struck out four batters.
Watsonville 11, Cupertino 1
WATSONVILLE — Amelia Martinez had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice, and the Wildcatz rolled in the CCS D-IV quarterfinals, which was called after five innings on the 10-run rule Saturday.
It was the Wildcatz’s first postseason win since it beat Westmont for the CCS D-I title in 2021.
The No. 2 Wildcatz (14-13) face No. 3 Woodside (14-11) at Los Gatos High on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Mia Espinoza had two hits, including a double, one RBI, and scored three runs for the No. 2 Wildcatz (14-13), the sixth-place finisher in the PCAL’s Gabilan Division.
Calina Casillas had two hits and scored a run, and Bella Ruiz had one hit and scored twice. Esperanza Sigala had one hit, one RBI, and scored a run. Taylor Alves had a hit and run scored, and Jillian Lerma had a hit and one RBI. Audrina Rodriguez also had one RBI.
Martinez picked up the complete-game win. She gave up five hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out seven batters.
The No. 7 Pioneers (15-9) were the runner-up to Saratoga in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League’s El Camino Division.
Gilroy 3, Scotts Valley 1
GILROY — The two-time defending SCCAL champion Falcons were held to one hit in their CCS D-I quarterfinal loss Saturday. Senior Abby Howell scored on a RBI single from classmate Gracie Delgado.
Senior ace Sofie Seese took the complete-game loss for the No. 7 Falcons (21-6-1). She gave up five hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
The No. 2 Mustangs (19-7) faces No. 3 Saratoga (20-2) in the semifinals. The Falcons edged No. 6 Mills of Millbrae 3-2 on Saturday.
Woodside 7, San Lorenzo Valley 1
WOODSIDE — Junior Sophia Sarmiento had a hit and scored the Cougars’ lone run in the seventh inning of their CCS D-IV quarterfinal loss Saturday.
Senior Olive Colby had one RBI for the No. 6 Cougars (12-10), the third-place finisher in the SCCAL.
Junior Mo Overbey hit two doubles, had one RBI, and scored a run for the No. 3 Wildcats (14-11), who tied for fourth place in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Bay Division. Junior Elizabeth Severin had a hit and two RBI.
Junior Hannah Walker earned the complete-game win with nine strikeouts. Sophomore Grace Purtcher took the loss.
