After over 100 days on administrative leave, Amy Kruppe has been reinstated as Hazel Park schools superintendent.

At a special meeting Thursday night, the school board voted 7-0 to approve her reinstatement after coming out of an over two hour closed session of over two hours to discuss the matter.

At a Jan. 27 meeting the board voted 7-0 to place Kruppe on non-disciplinary paid administrative leave.

According to a letter to district families, the action was taken “pending an investigation into potential board policy violations” and the same reason was reiterated in a letter announcing former Wyandotte superintendent Catherine Cost as interim superintendent on Feb. 2.

Results of that investigation were not revealed at the meeting and no board member commented after the vote was taken.

Board President Beverly Hinton said an official letter will be sent out on Monday “that will have some explanation”.

“The board has reviewed the matter regarding Dr. Amy Kruppe and has decided to return Dr. Kruppe back to the superintendent on or before June 30,” Treasurer Heidi Fortess said in a motion to approve her return from leave. “The exact date will be determined at a later time.”Board Vice President Deborah LaFramboise seconded the motion. Approval of the motion drew an emotional round of applause from the packed gallery of people coming out to support Kruppe.

“First, I would like to thank Dr. Cost for the work she has done with the district. She has been a pleasure to work with,” said Kristy Cales, Hazel Park director of human resources. “I’d also like to welcome back my mentor and my boss Dr. Amy Kruppe. As a parent of a 2025 graduate this year, I implore the board to get this over with quickly so that Dr. Kruppe can stand there and hand out diplomas to our graduates for 2025.”

The board approved Cost as interim superintendent to take over for Tammy McHenry, principal at Hazel Park High School, who was named acting superintendent on Jan. 28. Cost has been paid $800 per day by the district in her role as interim superintendent
