Hannah Hidalgo scored 24 points and No. 3 Notre Dame handed Stanford the worst defeat of its storied women’s basketball program as the Fighting Irish rolled to a 96-47 victory Thursday night.
Notre Dame’s 49-point romp topped the 45-point victory in 1983 (96-51) by Long Beach State that had been Stanford’s worst loss until Thursday’s debacle in South Bend.
Stanford’s Nunu Agara, who averages 17.4 points and 8.1 rebounds a game, left the game in the first quarter with an injury.
Olivia Miles scored 20 points for Notre Dame (20-2, 11-0 ACC). Tess Heal led Stanford (11-11, 3-8 ACC) with 10 points.
No. 21 Cal suffers upset loss in Louisville >> Olivia Cochran scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help Louisville turn back No. 21 California 70-63 on Thursday night.
Imari Berry scored 14 points for the Cardinals (16-7, 9-3). Ugonne Onyiah led the Golden Bears (19-5, 7-4) with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Men’s basketball
Indiana’s Woodson not expected back next year >> Indiana coach Mike Woodson is not expected to return next season.
The 66-year-old Woodson has been under fire most of the past two seasons because his teams have underperformed. Indiana (14-9, 5-7 Big Ten) missed last year’s NCAA Tournament for the first time since Woodson returned to his alma mater in 2021.
NFL
Jags’ Armstead wins Man of the Year award >> Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead, whose Armstead Academic Project supports early childhood education, was selected the Walter Payton Man of the Year.
Armstead, a former 49er who openly discusses how his difficulty reading as a child made him self-conscious, routinely visits schools and reads to children as part of his mission to ensure young students of all socio-economic backgrounds have access to adequate educational resources.
Steelers to play a game in Ireland next season >> Dublin will host Ireland’s first NFL regular-season game when the Pittsburgh Steelers play at Croke Park in 2025, the league announced.
The Irish capital joins Madrid and Berlin as first-time hosts next season as the league continues to expand its global footprint.
The date and Pittsburgh’s opponent will be announced this spring.
Golf
Detry shoots 64, leads Phoenix Open >> Thomas Detry nearly aced the par-3 16th hole and shot a 7-under 64 in the second round to take a two-shot lead lead in the Phoenix Open.
Michael Kim shot a bogey-free 63 to reach 10 under and was tied with Alex Smalley, who shot 65.
Jordan Spieth put himself in the mix with eagles on 13 and 15, shooting 65 to reach 9 under in his second tournament since offseason wrist surgery. Three-time PGA Tour winner Tom Kim also was 9 under after shooting 66.
Argentine Emiliano Grillo set off the biggest roar — and the only beer shower — of the day, slam-dunking his tee shot on the rowdy par-3 16th for an ace.
Woods to play at Torrey Pines >> Tiger Woods committed to playing the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, returning to one of his favorite venues for his first PGA Tour start since the British Open last July.
Woods will be playing — and walking — 18 holes in competition for the first time since he had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain down his legs, his sixth surgery on his lower back. He will compete just over a week after the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died Tuesday at age 80.
Ko shoots 63 to take LPGA lead >> Three-time champion Jin Young Ko birdied six of her last nine holes for an 8-under 63 and a two-stroke lead over four players in the LPGA Tour’s Founders Cup in Bradenton, Fla.
Yealimi Noh had a 64 to match fellow American American Angel Yin — who shot her second straight bogey-free 66 — and Japan’s Minami Katsu (65) and South Korea’s Jin Hee Im (66) at 10 under.
