Future college students invited to explore PNW
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) invites high school students and their families interested in learning more about the university to attend one of two upcoming events. Preview PNW will be held at the Hammond Campus on Oct. 19 starting at the Student Union and Library Building, 2233 173rd St. The Preview PNW at the Westville Campus will take place Nov. 16 starting at the James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex, 1401 U.S. 421. On both dates, check-in will begin at 8 a.m. and programming begins at 8:30 a.m. The event is free and open to prospective students of all ages and their families. Attendees will tour the PNW campus and learn about undergraduate programs, campus life and housing options, the admissions process, financial aid and available scholarships, NCAA Division II athletics, PNW’s Honors College and study abroad opportunities. Lake County Public Library community programs
Lake County Public Libraries will host a variety of programs for the community. The Merrillville branch, 1919 W. 81st Ave., will host a program for adults: A Tale of Two Chicagos — The White City and the Murder Castle of Englewood at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Explore the history of Chicago serial killer H.H. Holmes, as presented in “The Devil in the White City.” Register at 219-769-3541. The Hobart branch, 100 Main St., will offer Basics of Communication — Adulting for Teens Series at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Register at 219-942-2243. The Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St., will host Let the Dead Speak — Lake County History Through Its Cemeteries, a program for children, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Registration is at 219-838-2394. Free Senior Health and Wellness Fair
Northwest Indiana senior citizens will have the chance to get free health screenings and talk with vendors providing senior services at Franciscan Health’s Senior Health and Wellness Fair from 1-3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Villa Cesare, 900 Eagle Ridge Drive, Schererville. Dr. Cathleen McGovern and Dr. Christopher McIntire will present “Advanced Care Planning and Advanced Directives: Let’s Get Talking.” Free screenings will include glucose, bone density, body fat analysis, fall risk and spirometry. Refreshments and giveaways also will be available for participants. The event is free, but registration is required at 800-931-3322.
