Tiger Woods committed Friday to playing the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, returning to one of his favorite venues for his first PGA Tour start since the British Open last July.

Woods will be playing — and walking — 18 holes in competition for the first time since he had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain down his legs, his sixth surgery on his lower back. He will compete just over a week after the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died Tuesday at age 80.

Woods is the host of the Genesis Invitational, which was moved from Riviera Country Club because of wildfires that devastated the Los Angeles community of Pacific Palisades.

He has never won at Riviera, but his eight wins at Torrey Pines include the 2008 U.S. Open. The public course along the Pacific Ocean is also the site of his most recent top-10 finish on the PGA Tour, a tie for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2020.

The Genesis Invitational is a limited-field signature event with no cut. Woods hasn’t played four rounds in an event since last year’s Masters, when he broke the tournament record for consecutive cuts made with his 24th. He finished last among those who made the cut, shooting 82-77 over the weekend. He played the other three major championships last year, missing the cut each time.

Thomas Detry nearly aced the par-3 16th hole and shot a 7-under 64 in the second round to take a two-shot lead lead in the Phoenix Open.

Detry had eight birdies and a bogey to reach 12 under on another day of perfect conditions at TPC Sawgrass. Michael Kim shot a bogey-free 63 to reach 10 under and was tied with Alex Smalley, who shot 65.

Jordan Spieth put himself in the mix with eagles on 13 and 15, shooting 65 to reach 9 under in his second event since offseason wrist surgery. Three-time PGA Tour winner Tom Kim also was 9 under after shooting 66.

Argentine Emiliano Grillo set off the biggest roar — and the only beer shower — of the day, slam-dunking his tee shot on the rowdy par-3 16th for an ace.

Justin Thomas nearly matched Grillo, hitting his tee shot on No. 16 to 3 feet in a 68 that took him to 8 under.

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler shot a bogey-free 66 to reach 7 under.

Three-time champion Jin Young Ko birdied six of her last nine holes for an 8-under 63 and a two-stroke lead over four players in the LPGA Tour’s Founders Cup in Bradenton, Fla.

Daniil Sokolov’s scores are getting better at the Qatar Masters. They still aren’t good enough for the 13-year-old prodigy to make the cut but time is on his side.

Sokolov, a Russian national who represents Qatar and was in the field courtesy of an invitation, shot 4-over 76 in the second round to back up his opening-round 75 at Doha Golf Club. At 7-over par, he won’t be playing the weekend.

Sokolov played the Qatar Masters last year, at 12, and also missed the cut after shooting rounds of 78 and 82.

Englishman Brandon Robinson Thompson was leading by two strokes on 10 under after shooting 68 in his second round.

WINTER SPORTS

Marco Odermatt’s rivals were left in awe after the Swiss star dominated the super-G at the Alpine world championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, justifying his status as the big pre-race favorite.

The lauded Swiss standout beat silver medalist Raphael Haaser by a full second, the second-biggest winning margin in a men’s super-G at the worlds.

“Everything was perfect ... I couldn’t ask for anything else,” said Odermatt after becoming the first Swiss world champion in super-G since his childhood idol Didier Cuche won the title in 2009.

It’s the first super-G medal from a major event for Odermatt, who is the Olympic giant slalom champion and won the downhill and GS titles at the worlds two years ago.

Odermatt is a three-time overall champion and has won 44 races, including 14 super-Gs, on the World Cup. He is the runaway leader in the super-G standings and the only racer with multiple wins in the discipline this season.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Indiana coach Mike Woodson won’t return next season, the school said.

Woodson, 66, has been under fire most of the past two seasons because his teams have underperformed. Indiana did not make last year’s NCAA Tournament for the first time since Woodson returned to his alma mater for the 2021-22 season, and they could miss the 68-team field again this season.

Indiana heads into today’s matchup against Michigan having lost four straight and six of seven. The Hoosiers were this season’s preseason pick to finish second in the Big Ten.

RJ Luis Jr. scored six of his 21 points in the final 2:16 to help visiting No. 12 St. John’s extend its win streak to 10 games with a 68-62 comeback victory over No. 19 UConn. St. John’s improved to 21-3, 12-1 in the Big East. UConn is 16-7, 8-4.

MLB

The Chicago White Sox agreed to a minor league contract with infielder Brandon Drury that includes an invitation to big league spring training camp.

The White Sox also claimed left-hander Brandon Eisert off waivers from Tampa Bay and agreed to a minor league deal with infielder Tristan Gray.

Drury, 32, is coming off a disappointing 2024 season. He batted .169 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 97 games for the Angels.

BOXING

Canelo Alvarez agreed to a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, with the Mexican star leveraging a widely speculated bout with Jake Paul for a much bigger contract.

Turki Alalshikh, the head of Riyadh Season and the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, announced the deal on social media.

The first fight under Alvarez’s new deal would be in May in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Terence Crawford — the long-reigning welterweight champion — might be his second fight.
