For the 12th year, dozens of people turned out to help clean up Woodland’s homeless shelter.

In the past, the “day of work” was held at Fourth & Hope in downtown, but this year volunteers turned out to clean up “The Campus,” located on East Beamer Street.

There were more than 30 people who volunteered on Martin Luther King Day Monday, skipping the inauguration ceremony of President Donald Trump, to work at painting doors, landscaping and general maintenance.

While some teams of workers braved the cold, windy weather outside, others were indoors cleaning tables, light fixtures and a variety of miscellaneous activities. Some residents of the facility also turned out to show their support by sweeping up communal areas and doing routine maintenance.

Prior to their work, volunteers were treated to a continental breakfast in the dining room of the Community Services Center at 1903 E. Beamer St.

That’s where volunteer coordinator Dawn Brown lauded their efforts, noting Martin Luther King Day was the only time people went to work on their day off.

Fourth & Hope has been in Woodland for about 40 years and provides an emergency homeless shelter for up to 100 people throughout Yolo County.

There are 61 units where people can live independently as well as the new Walter’s House, which held a grand opening ceremony last December, and is expanding from 44 to 60 beds to assist people in need of substance abuse treatment services in Yolo County.

Construction of the 15,000-square-foot facility began in April 2023.

In addition to the 100-bed homeless shelter, the Campus also provides 60 permanent supportive housing units along with counseling services, laundry facilities and a dining area.
