No. 6 Pioneers dominate Miami Redhawks 6-2
Twelve different players recorded a point in No. 6 University of Denver’s 6-2 win over the Miami RedHawks on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
Senior Jack Devine and junior Aidan Thompson each had a goal and an assist. Senior captain Carter King had two assists. Four other players also scored for the Pios. And five others had an assist.
Miami’s Bruno Bruveris gave up six goals on 36 shots; Denver’s Matt Davis gave up two power-play goals on just 10 shots.
Denver defeated the Redhawks 4-1 on Friday night.
After a weekend off, Denver travels to Minnesota Duluth for a two-game set Jan.24-25.
Santa Anita postpones weekend racing as track is staging area for fire efforts
LOS ANGELES>> A flareup of the wildfire on the west side of Los Angeles that prompted new evacuations has caused Santa Anita to cancel horse racing this weekend.
The sprawling 90-year-old track in Arcadia, near the smoldering Eaton fire that decimated Altadena, also is being used to support several relief efforts.
The charity drop-off that was set up at the Rose Bowl was relocated to Santa Anita’s south parking lot on Friday. Southern California Edison is using the entire north parking lot as its basecamp to restore power.
Ohio State favored by 9 1/2 points over Notre Dame
LAS VEGAS>> Ohio State ended the regular season with many questions about its program under coach Ryan Day after the Buckeyes were upset by rival Michigan 13-10 on Nov. 30.
Now, the Buckeyes not only are in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Jan. 20 against Notre Dame in Atlanta, they are the second-biggest favorites in the title game since the playoff began 10 years ago.
BetMGM Sportsbook and Caesars Sportsbook each had Ohio State favored by 9 1/2 points on Saturday. The only larger line for the championship game, according to Vegas Insider, occurred two years ago when Georgia was favored by 13 1/2 over TCU. The Bulldogs easily covered with a 65-7 victory.
Clément Noël wins slalom at foggy Adelboden
ADELBODEN, Switzerland>> Clément Noël skied through the fog to win a World Cup slalom race and deny Brazil a first-ever victory by just 0.02 seconds.
The 2022 Olympic champion beat Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, the Norway-born racer who now represents his mother’s home nation Brazil, to get his third win of the season.
Falcons fire defensive coordinator, assistant
ATLANTA>> The Atlanta Falcons fired defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake and defensive line coach Jay Rodgers following first-year coach Raheem Morris’ sharp criticism of his defense’s disappointing finish. The Falcons missed the playoffs for the seventh straight season following a 44-38 OT loss to Carolina.
David Moyes returns as manager for Everton
LIVERPOOL, England>> Everton hired David Moyes for a second stint as manager at the Premier League club. The 61-year-old Moyes managed Everton from 2002-13, during which he led the Merseyside club to the 2009 FA Cup final and four European campaigns.
