Fresh off a historic achievement in Teagan Hayes’s 1,000th point and a perfect start to their Sierra Delta League season, the Woodland Christian varsity girls basketball team kept the good times rolling with a massive 71-5 win over Highlands Friday night at Jack Hamlin Gym.

“We focused on running plays, getting everyone a basket, and playing a clean basketball game in terms of staying healthy and not turning the ball over,” Cardinals head coach Shilo Sorbello said. “It was a success by those measures.

The Cardinals (9-5, 3-0) raced out to a huge lead in the first quarter, going up 19-0. Things remained much the same in the second quarter, as the shutout extended into halftime, with the home side up 43-0.

The shutout watch even lasted into the fourth quarter, as the Cardinals outscored the Scots 12-0 before pumping the breaks in the fourth quarter. They only outscored them 16-5 and eventually won 71-5.

During the game, Sorbello mentioned one of the highlights of the 71-5 win was getting Abby and Peyton Brookshire in on the action for their first baskets on the season as they combined for 5 points. Payton, a senior, got her basket early in the third quarter, but things got dicey for Abby, a freshman.

Nevertheless, after draining a free throw late in the fourth, she got her moment and drained a live shot with just under two minutes left.

“They are both new to basketball, so it was fun for the team to work the ball inside to them,” Sorbello recalled.

Teagan Hayes and Keziah Maldonado-Lemus, in particular, led the way for the Cardinal’s offense, collecting 4 assists each to go with a game-high 14 points for Maldonado-Lemus and 8 for Hayes.

Siena Sorbello added 12 points to the mix to go with her 3 rebounds. Bailee Broward was once again a monster on the boards, picking up a game-high 8 rebounds to go with her 2 assists and 12 points. Elena Ganyo had 8 points, 2 rebounds and an assist.

Up next for the Cardinals will be a Tuesday road trip to Golden Sierra for an SDL clash set for 6 p.m. They will then travel to Winters on Wednesday before wrapping up the week with a home game against league foe San Juan on Friday.

“With three games this week and three games each of the next two weeks, a game like this really serves as a practice for us,” Sorobello said. “We are working on improving every day, with the goal of peaking for the playoffs. Winters should provide us with a good challenge next week, and we are looking forward to hosting Woodland the week after.”
