SOUTH BEND —Brandon Wimbush will be Notre Dame’s starting quarterback when the season opens Sept. 2 against Temple. Coach Brian Kelly reiterated that Monday during his first news conference of the 2017 season.

Last year Kelly appointed Malik Zaire, who has transferred to Florida, and DeShone Kizer, now with the Browns, as co-starters, creating some tension.

Kizer eventually won the job, but the Irish didn’t win many games, posting their worst record (4-8) since going 3-9 in 2007.

This year, no such tension among the quarterbacks exists.

“We know the No. 1 quarterback is Brandon Wimbush,” Kelly said. “But there’s going to be competition. There’s not a 1A and a 1B like last year, but we don’t have to create competition.”

Sophomore Ian Book and freshman Avery Davis are the only other scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

Tillery in: Junior defensive lineman Jerry Tillery’s season ended on the sideline last year with a tongue-lashing from Kelly after Tillery kicked an injured USC player in the head and stomped on the ankle of another downed Trojan.

Tillery apologized for his actions two days later, then attended counseling and performed community service to get back in Kelly’s good graces.

Tillery will not be suspended to start this season, Kelly said.

“We took that situation extremely serious and took steps to make sure he was held accountable,” Kelly said.

Cage out: A concussion ended defensive tackle Daniel Cage’s season last year, and Cage, who also underwent knee surgery this summer, will not play in 2017, Kelly said.

Side effects of the concussion have lingered for Cage, who missed the final four games last season. He started four of the eight games he played and made 10 tackles and forced a fumble. In 2015 he played in 11 games with seven starts and made 18 tackles.

“He’s had a couple medical conditions,” Kelly said. “He’s had a couple of concussions and he’s had a knee.”
