May 11, 1933 - June 26, 2022 S

onia Lee Hathaway passed away peacefully in her San Marino home Sunday June 26th. Born in San Francisco she spent her early childhood there and most notably experienced opening day of the Golden Gate Bridge sitting atop her father’s shoulders as he walked the span May 27, 1937.

An only child, she relocated with her parents (Franklin and Letha Reynolds) to Pasadena and attended South Pas San Marino High. There she met the love of her life Austin Hodge Hathaway Jr. (a.k.a. ’Buz’). Sonia and Buz were a celebrated couple but separated after graduation when Buz attended Claremont McKenna College then enlisted in the Army until 1956. Sonia attended the University of Southern California where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Buz and Sonia were reunited upon his return from service and were married April 12, 1958 in San Marino. They soon moved back to Northern California (Los Altos) and became proud parents of Austin Hodge Hathaway III (a.k.a. ‘Trey’) born in 1962 and Ashley Hathaway in 1966.

In 1968, the family moved back to Southern California to live in San Marino where she spent the rest of her life, full of friends, family, many vacations to Mexico, and plenty of pool time at their second home in the desert community of Indian Wells. Sonia is survived by her husband Buz Hathaway, brother-in-law Harry Hathaway, children Trey Hathaway, Ashley Hathaway, daughter-in-law Janet Hathaway, son-in-law Timothy Zgraggen, and grandchildren Madison Hathaway, Georgia Hathaway, and Taylor Hathaway. No services per Sonia’s wishes. Donations in her name may be made to The Luminaires or Doheny Eye Institute of Los Angeles.
