Here’s what stood out from Week 3 on the east metro high school football scene:

Team of the night: Hastings

The Raiders are 3-0 after winning a clash of unbeatens Friday in their 24-20 victory over Chaska. Hastings built a 17-0 lead at the break before the Hawks charged back with 14 points in the third.

But, ultimately, Hastings was able to hold off Chaska. Marlowe Strain had three catches for 90 yards for the Raiders, along with a rushing score. Raiders star back Zach Shatek ran for 190 yards and a touchdown.

Hastings looks like a legitimate potential challenger to. St. Thomas Academy in Class 5A, Section 3 this fall. Those two teams will meet Oct. 8.

Honorable mention

Lakeville South: It was an impressive rivalry victory for the Cougars, who limited Lakeville North’s run game to just 2.4 yards per carry in their 26-6 victory.

Player of the night: Baldwin-Woodville’s Luke Janke

Luke Janke tallied three interceptions and a pair of rushing scores as Baldwin-Woodville topped Amery 24-7 in a critical Middle Border Conference battle between two teams who entered Friday undefeated in MBC play.

Honorable mention

Cretin-Derham Hall quarterback Gavin Russell: The Raiders’ signal caller threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns in Cretin-Derham Hall’s 27-15 win over Bloomington Jefferson.

Play of the night: Rosemount’s late touchdown

Trailing Prior Lake 14-7 in the final 10 seconds of the game, while inside the Lakers’ 5-yard line, Finn Macken ran a play action and tossed the ball up to Charlie Wielinski.

Wielinski adjusted his body mid-air to pull down an impressive touchdown grab. The Irish rolled the dice, electing to go for a 2-point conversion and the win, and converted as Macken plowed his way into the end zone for a 15-14 victory.

Honorable mentions

White Bear Lake’s game-winning touchdown: Facing a 4th-and-4 from the Farmington 38, with the contest squared at 14-14 in the final minute, Wyatt Stachowiak hit a short strike to Colton Butts, who raced to the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

The victory moves the Bears to 3-0 on the season with their Metro East subdistrict opener against East Ridge next week.

Champlin Park’s big interception: With the Rebels leading Centennial 7-0 in the fourth quarter on Friday, Damon Torke jumped in front of a Centennial pass and returned it 55 yards for a score to make it 14-0. The Rebels held on for a 14-7 win in a Class 6A slobberknocker that will go a long way in terms of, not only determining the Metro North subdistrict title, but also playoff seeding.

On Saturday

Byron held off Hill-Murray 21-14 in a Class 4A tilt that could serve as a potential state tournament preview. Elijah Rodemeyer hit Beau Nicklay for a pair of first-half scoring strikes to put the Bears up 14-0.

Big state battle

Moorhead topped Minnetonka 42-28 on Friday in a matchup featuring a pair of Class 6A titans. Gophers commits Jett Feeney and David Mack starred for the Spuds.

Feeney threw for 357 yards and five total touchdowns, while Mack had 16 grabs, four of which reached the end zone.

In Wisconsin

New Richmond beat Hudson 46-21 in a battle of Big Rivers Conference unbeatens, with the Tigers intercepting Hudson thrice.

River Falls is the conference’s other remaining unbeaten in Big Rivers play after the Wildcats shut out Chippewa Falls 14-0. River Falls limited the Cardinals to just 106 yards of total offense.

Baldwin-Woodville beat Amery 24-7 in a pivotal Middle Border Conference battle as Janke starred. The Warriors and Osceola are the two remaining unbeatens in MBC play.
