The boys basketball coach at Northview High School in Covina, who also taught in the Covina-Valley Unified School District, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful sexual acts with a minor on Wednesday, and police say there may be more victims, possibly including some of his students.

Christopher Michael Confair, 34, posted $100,000 bail and was released, according to the Los Angeles County inmate log.

The Covina Police Department in a Facebook post said Confair no longer works for the district. He had been employed as a substitute teacher from 2021 through February, the post said.

Confair could not be reached for comment Thursday. A message could not be left on his voicemail box, which was full. A message was sent to his school district email account as well as his X account.

Confair wrote in his X bio: “Here to mentor and give back to the youth and be hopeful to change lives.”

Police Sgt. Derek Gonzales, a department spokesperson, said the alleged victims range from middle school to high school students. Detectives have not determined over what period the alleged assaults took place, Gonzales said.

The school district on Thursday declined to comment on the arrest, citing the criminal investigation. Penni Welch, the executive assistant to Superintendent Elizabeth Eminhizer, referred a Southern California News Group reporter to a public relations firm.

Katie Emerson, a spokesperson for VMA Communications, emailed a statement that read in part:

“At Covina-Valley Unified School District, student safety is our top priority. We have been made aware of the recent arrest of a former substitute teacher. As this is an ongoing investigation with the Covina Police Department, the District is unable to comment further. Covina-Valley Unified is deeply committed to placing the highest priority on ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of all students and cultivating a safe learning environment,” said the statement, which did not identify Confair by name.

Emerson, in response to additional questions, said Confair primarily taught at Northview High.

Confair recently finished his sixth season as Northview’s boys basketball head coach. He was named the Southern California News Group’s San Gabriel Valley coach of the year following the 2023-24 season, when he guided the Vikings to a 24-11 record and to the CIF Southern Section Division 4A championship game against Temecula Valley, where they came up short in the finals.

Confair coached his last game for the Vikings on Feb. 5 at Rowland.

Confair was paid $36,953 in 2023, the most recent year for which information was available, according to the Transparent California website.

Police ask anyone with information on Confair to call 626-384-5621 or email chagle@covinaca.gov.
