SOUTH DAKOTA: Cupertino residents Larry and Donene Harrison took a road trip from South Dakota to Minnesota in September — great timing, Larry says, because the weather was beautiful and crowds were parse — on a journey that included a stop at Mount Rushmore and the Borglum Story Museum in nearby Keystone, which chronicles the history of the sculptor. “Keystone is a fun Old West town,” Larry says. “Nearby, Custer State Park features the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, an engineering marvel with corkscrew turns, tunnels and scenic pullouts. We visited the Indian Museum of North America and the Crazy Horse Monument, an ongoing sculpting effort that eventually will exceed Rushmore in scale.”
TRAVEL TIPS: “The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway is a scenic wonder and a good road, however it takes a lot of concentration to drive,” Larry says. “We took a full day van tour with a knowledgeable guide.”
