A Clinton Township murder defendant is mulling a proposal that he serve 30 years in prison on the allegation he shot the mother of his 2-year-old child in front of the child.
Jaion Barnes, 24, is considering whether to enter pleas to second-degree murder and felony firearm possession that would result in 28-year and two-year terms for the January 2024 slaying of Tianna Ross, 23, during an exchange of the child between the two outside his residence, according to court records from a March 20 pretrial hearing.
Second-degree murder is punishable by up to life.
The tentative deal includes dismissal of a weapons charge and domestic violence charge, second notice, records say.
Barnes is expected to indicate his decision at an April 10 pretrial.
If he rejects the deal, the case likely will be scheduled for a trial.
Macomb County Circuit Judge Matthew Sabaugh also is considering whether to approve the deal after indicating at the prior hearing he was taking the plea under advisement.According to police, Ross brought the child to Barnes’ residence at Peachtree Apartments at about 4:30 p.m. Jan. 15, 2024 to give to Barnes in the foyer of the apartment building when they got into an argument and Barnes shot her three times, according to Macomb prosecutors. She was shot in the head, face and torso.
The nature of the argument between the couple was not revealed at the district court preliminary examination. Within hours of the shooting, Barnes called his mother, Latakka Lawson, and told her that he and Ross “struggled over the gun and it went off,” Lawson testified. “S— got crazy,” he told her, she testified. Barnes was arrested the next day after he exited a vehicle and walked toward the entrance of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
