Three people were killed Wednesday afternoon in Harvey after their vehicle hit a freight train, according to rail company CSX Transportation.

The company said a vehicle bypassed the lower crossing gates and hit the side of a freight train passing on Park Avenue near Thornton Township High School.

CSX said that Dolton first-responders arrived but that all three people in the vehicle were pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office recorded the three deaths, listing the time of the crash as 12:46 p.m. Kevin Walker, 32, of Blue Island, was identified as one of the three killed in the crash. Another has been identified but the medical examiner’s office has not yet notified the next of kin, and the third remains unidentified, officials said.

CSX said there were no injuries to the train crew.

“CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragedy, and we will work on scene to support local law enforcement as they continue to investigate,” a statement from CSX reads.

A Harvey spokesperson said the Illinois State Police and Harvey Police Department are actively investigating the incident, and more information will be released once available.

In University Park, police said they were notified at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday that a Canadian National train hit a car at a railroad crossing on Stuenkel Road and Governors Highway.

Police said the University Park Fire Department was alerted and assisted the vehicle’s occupants, which included a small child and an adult. Both occupants did not have any injuries, police said.

Police said there was no indication of any malfunctions of the railroad crossing gates and lights.

While police removed the vehicle from the tracks, traffic was temporarily obstructed, police said. Train service was restored after the car was removed.

Canadian National Railroad Police were notified and an investigation is ongoing, police said.
