It was a triumphant return to the Big 12 Conference for the Colorado women’s soccer team.

Playing the first Big 12 game for any CU team in the return season in the conference, the 19th-ranked Buffaloes opened league play with a 1-0 win at Kansas State on Thursday.

It was the first Big 12 game for the women’s soccer program since Texas A&M eliminated the Buffs from the 2010 conference tournament. It was CU’s first game against Kansas State, which began playing women’s soccer in 2016, and the victory extended the Buffs’ winning streak to six games.

Goalie Jordan Nytes turned in her sixth consecutive scoreless outing, and freshman Jace Holley provided the scoring as the Buffs won their first Big 12 game since defeating Nebraska on Oct. 29, 2010.

Nytes, who won this week’s Big 12 goalkeeper of the week honor for the second time this season, made five saves while extending her scoreless streak to 519 minutes, 52 seconds — dating back to the final minute of a loss against North Carolina on Aug. 18. Nytes jumped from seventh all the way to second among the longest shutout streaks in program history, trailing only the record mark of 536:03 recorded by JJ Tompkins in 2017.

It was Nytes’ 20th win with the Buffs, moving into a tie for seventh all-time at CU with Kara Linder, and with 14 shutouts at CU, Nytes has tied Kate Scheele for fifth all-time.

Sophomore Claire Curran started the scoring play in the 49th minute with a pinpoint feed to Holley, who beat Kansas State goalie Murphy Sheaff for her second goal of the season. It was Curran’s second assist.

CU made it a long night for Sheaff, posting a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal. CU leading scorer Shyra James returned to the lineup after missing Sunday’s win against Weber State due to an injury and recorded four of CU’s 23 shots overall.

CU will be idle for a week before resuming Big 12 Conference play at Oklahoma State on Sept. 19. The Cowgirls opened Big 12 play on Thursday with a 1-0 win at Baylor.
