Following the best start to the season for any College of the Redwoods’ baseball team in school history with the Corsairs going 8-0 to begin the new year, College of the Redwoods have now dropped seven in a row including two on Friday in the team’s home openers.

It’s been a stark dichotomy over the team’s first 15 games, but the Corsairs’ pitching staff has struggled preventing runs during the current losing streak, after allowing only 3.25 runs-per-game during the winning streak, that number has grown to 15.43 in the seven losses that followed.

The losing streak coincided with the Corsairs beginning Golden Valley Conference play, after getting a 5-1 win over Shasta to begin conference play, CR lost their final two games to the Knights, were swept by Butte and dropped the first two to Feather River on Friday.

While the Corsairs’ offense hasn’t seen as dramatic of a shift, they too have not seen the results they enjoyed to open the season, scoring 4.43 runs a game after opening the season averaging at over six runs a game.

Del Norte sweeps in Yreka

After a pair of losses and a tie to begin the season, the Del Norte Warriors have won three in a row after two tournament wins on Friday against Mt. Shasta and Las Plumas in Yreka.

The Warriors opened Friday with a 12-3 victory over Mt. Shasta with senior Colin Tromble getting the win on the mound after striking out seven in just three innings of work for Del Norte. At the plate, junior Saxon Taylor led the way going 4-5 with a double and a triple while scoring three runs and driving in two more. Junior Preston Daniels also had a big day offensively, picking up five RBIs while going 2-4 in the first game Friday.

The second game was a lot closer for the Warriors, holding on to win 9-8 after taking a 6-0 lead in the top of the first. Las Plumas tied the game in the 5th inning at 7-7, but Del Norte answered with two runs in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference as the Thunderbirds’ were able to get one run back, but not two as Del Norte got their third win in a row.

Across the area, Arcata grabbed a 4-3 win in extra innings over Healdsburg in the Fort Bragg tournament Friday before a 7-3 win over Durham Saturday with the Tigers now sitting at 4-0-1 early in the season.

The Hoopa Valley Warriors dropped two games Friday, falling 10-0 to Fort Bragg and then 8-2 to Point Arena as they slide to 1-4 so far this season. The St. Bernard’s Crusaders also fell twice on Friday with losses to Durham and Healdsburg. The Crusaders dropped game one 6-1 to Durham as SB managed only three hits while senior Mateo Gutierrez pitched 4.1 innings, allowing five runs while striking out seven.

In game two, the Crusaders fell 7-5 to Healdsburg while again only having three hits in the game. Junior Michael Fugate went 1-3 with a single and knocked in two runs for the Crusaders. While getting hits wasn’t easy for the Crusaders, they did their work on the bases, swiping eight bags in the game with sophomore Tyler Heinrichs getting two himself.

The Crusaders held a 5-1 lead in the second game but Healdsburg scored six runs in the bottom of the third and the Greyhounds would not give up the lead from there, knocking the Crusaders down to 1-6-1.
