Julie Rhines Mangney was born in Spokane, WA to George and Anna Rhines. At the age of 8, she moved with her family to El Cerrito, CA. She graduated from El Cerrito High School in 1958 and went on to earn aB.A. in Social Work from the University of California, Berkeley in 1963.

That same year, she married John Lawrence Mangney. The couple moved to Sunnyvale in 1965, where they raised their family. Julie had a passion for helping people and found great fulfillment in her career as aHospice Social Worker for Pathways (formerly Midpeninsula Hospice), where she worked until her retirement.

Julie is survived by her children: Susanna Wahl (Larry) of Cheyenne, WY; Andrew Mangney (Laney) of Davis, CA; and Kristin Harris (Todd) of Los Gatos, CA. Her cherished grandchildren include Luke and Mia Mangney, Eric and Harley Wahl, and Nathan and Meredith Harris. She is also survived by her sister-in-laws George Anne Rhines and Mary Nelson and brother-in-law William Nelson, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brother, George “Bud” Rhines.

Julie was active in Girl Scouts growing up and remained friends with her fellow scout friends her entire life. She enjoyed camping and sailing with friends and family, and brunch gatherings with her Soul Sisters church group and her social work friends. She was anavid San Francisco Giants fan and loved going to games. Go Giants!

Julie and John were long-time members of Sequoia Yacht Club and had many fond memories with their cruising mates. They also shared a love of travel, enjoying countless RV trips with the Lone Cypress Winnitascans and the Roving Roosters. Together, they explored every U.S. state except Hawaii and took cruises around the world. Julie especially loved being with her family and made sure that holidays and birthdays were always special. She dearly loved her grandchildren and was very involved in their lives. She enjoyed attending grandkids’ sporting events, graduations, and other momentous activities.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, Nana, aunt, and friend.

Funeral services are Monday, June 30, 2025, at 11:00 am at Immanual Lutheran Church, 1715 Grant Road, Los Altos. A reception will follow. Interment will be on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 11:00 am at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Julie Mangney’s name to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Los Altos.
