Detroit Catholic Central captured its third consecutive Division 1 state wrestling title Saturday afternoon in Kalamazoo by beating third-seeded Davison 50-18 in the finals.
Mack Moscovic, Ryan Totten and Wyatt Lees all grabbed wins for the Shamrocks in the lower weight classes. Then, after Davison pulled it back to within four points, Grayson Fuchs, Alexander Buskirk and Braxten Roche extended CC’s lead to 26-12.
Davison scored one last win at 165 pounds before Catholic Central ran away with it. Beginning with Caden and Lee Krueger at 175 and 190 pounds, reespectively, the Shamrocks owned the upper-weight classes, continuing with Connor Bercume and Benny Eziuka.
Richard Mogle at 106 wrapped up the dominance for Catholic Central, who have reached the mountaintop in seven of the last nine seasons.
The Shamrocks defeated No. 4 seed Clarkston 39-25 earlier in the day to reach last round, but before that, Clarkston pulled out a 36-35 win over No. 5 Temperance Bedford in Friday’s quarterfinals. Gavin Culloty, Archer Anderson, Preston LeFevre and Nathaniel Carter accounted for wins in four of the Wolves’ first five matches to amass a 22-5 advantage before Bedford began to turn the tide and eventually got to within a point, but Joseph Hahn’s win at 106 over Grayson Vaillant helped locked in the points to advance. Ayden Mutter and Chase Olson also picked up victories in that quarterfinal for Clarkston.
Fourteen Shamrocks and nine Wolves are qualified to compete at this coming weekend’s individual finals at Ford Field.
