Intelligentsia Cup races seeking volunteer course marshals

Volunteer course marshals are needed for the West Dundee River Challenge, the first event in the 10-stop Prairie State Cycling Classic’s Intelligentsia Cup pro/am bike racing series being held Friday, July 21.

Course marshals are responsible for pedestrian control and safety, a village news release said. Training is provided and several shifts are available during the daylong event.

Top riders will be competing throughout the day, and other activities are planned, including live music, race-side dining, a KidZone activity area and additional family-friendly activities.

Zoo program to look at city’s butter, condensed milk history

The Elgin Area Historical Society will be hosting a free talk on how Elgin was once the butter capital of the Midwest on Saturday, July 15, at Lords Park Zoo in Elgin.

The program also will discuss how Gail Borden, the man for which the city’s library is named, is credited with inventing a new way to condense milk and establishing the Elgin Milk Condensing Co.

The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Tefft Farm, which is located inside Lords Park Zoo, 207 Grand Blvd.

St. Hugh church holding community blood drive July 20

St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church in Elgin will hold a community blood drive from 2:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 20, in Wiedrich Hall on the church campus, 36W957 W Highland Ave.

Appointments are appreciated, but walk-ins are welcome, a news release on the event said.

Gail Borden libraries holding Reading is Rad scavenger hunt

In conjunction with its Teenage Mutant Ninja exhibit, a Reading is Rad scavenger hunt is being held through Aug. 31 at Gail Borden public libraries in Elgin and South Elgin.

Participants are asked to visit 26 participating local businesses to scan a code for a secret turtle word as part of the challenge, a news release said.

Participants who find 10 or more turtle words can visit a library branch to receive a cup and backpack as prizes. Anyone who finds all of the turtle words will be entered into a drawing for an iPad.
