Organist Alan Morrison, head of the organ department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Claremont United Church of Christ, as part of the church’s ongoing concert series.
Morrison, who has given concerts throughout North America, South America, Europe and Russia, will perform on the church’s Glatter-Götz/Rosales pipe organ, playing music by J.S. Bach and by American composers Florence Price, Ann Wilson, Amy Beach and William Grant Still, among others, according to a news release.
Claremont United Church of Christ’s Glatter-Götz/Rosales organ, with 4,041 pipes, resulted from the partnership of organ builder Caspar Glatter-Götz of Owingen, Germany; Los Angeles-based Manuel Rosales, who took artistic responsibility for the organ’s tonal character; and Carey Robertson, who, 26 years later, continues as the church’s principal organist.
The Glatter-Götz/Rosales team went on to design and build the Walt Disney Concert Hall organ, according to the news release.
Morrison, in addition to teaching at the Curtis Institute, is college organist at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and organist in residence at Spivey Hall at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia.
At the start of his performance career, he took first prize in two national organ competitions, the Arthur Poister National Organ Playing Competition and the Clarence Mader National Organ Playing Competition, both in 1991 while he was still a student., according to the news release.
Tickets for the Sunday concert are available for a suggested donation of $35 for adults, $25 for seniors and $10 for students, at claremontucc.org/concerts">claremontucc.org/concerts and at the door.
