Forward Javan Johnson connected on seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 29 points, and the Santa Cruz Warriors opened the regular season with a 115-109 win over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, on Friday night.

Johnson also had four rebounds, one steal, and one block.

The Warriors finished with 30 assists and made 14 3-pointers.

Forward Kevin Knox II had 24 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals for the Warriors (1-0), good for his fourth double-double of the 2024-25 campaign. Guard Yuri Collins had 19 points and six assists, and forward Jackson Rowe had 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

Two-way guard Nate Williams led the Vipers (0-1) in scoring with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Two-way forward N’Faly Dante had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Forward Nate Hinton came off the bench and recorded 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Three other Vipers had double-digit outings: Guard Markquis Nowell (16 points), forward Jermaine Samuels Jr. (15 points), and forward Teddy Allen (14 points).

The teams squared off again on Saturday, after the Sentinel went to press.

Boys wrestling

Pat Lovell Holiday Classic >> A pair of Aptos sophomore will compete in the semifinals of their respective weight divisions on the final day of the Pat Lovell Holiday Classic at Aptos High on Saturday.

Cruz Contreras (132 pounds) faces Paso Robles junior Drake Melloin in the semifinals, and Cole Moules (157) faces Ponderosa senior Kaden Martinez.

Clovis led the 60-team tournament after Day 1 with 152 points. Ponderosa (131) was second, and Pittman (125) was third.

Boys soccer

Aptos 2, San Dieguito Academy (Encinitas) 1 >> Josiah Siqueiros, minute 61, followed up a free kick from Damian Garcia in the 61st minute for the decisive goal, and the Mariners won their opener at the SoCal Classic in Oceanside on Friday.

Siqueiros finished with two goals. He also gave Aptos (5-1-1) the lead in the 20th minute, when he finished off a cross from Nami Banks.

San Dieguito (1-5-3) scored on a penalty kick in the 58th to knot the score at 1-all.

Mariners goalie Noah Curran made five saves.

Aptos played Woodrow Wilson (3-3-2) of Long Beach in the Elite Division semifinals at Oceanside High on Saturday, after the Sentinel went to press.
