The UC Santa Cruz women’s golf team, led by freshman Samantha Shaw, took seventh place out of 12 teams at the two-day UC Santa Cruz Invite, which concluded at Pacific Grove Golf Links on Sunday.

The Banana Slugs were in fifth place after Saturday’s opening round, but closed with 334 to post a 642 total.

No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the team title with a 599 total. No. 4 Washington-St. Louis (601) took second, and No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer (608) took third.

Sophomore Amy Beanblossom of Washington-St. Louis earned medalist honors with rounds of 68 and 75 for a 1-over 143 total.

C-M-S senior Stella Cheng (71-74—145) took second place, and two of her teammates, sophomore Jessie Kong (73-76—149) and junior Esther Lee (71-78—149), tied for third.

The Banana Slugs’ Shaw shot rounds of 75 and 79 for a 154 total to tie for ninth place.

Freshman Olivia Lew (76-83—159; T25), freshman Adeline Truong (79-83—162; T28) and sophomore Jiya Dalal (78-89—167; T45) also scored for UCSC. Sophomore Elana McGrew (91-94—185), a Scotts Valley alumna who was a two-time Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League MVP, took 72nd.

UCSC’s Alyssa Castellanos (87-82—169; T49), Lauren Silva (92-84—176; T61), Brisa Trollinger (92-88—180; T67), and Isabella Esquivel (93-100—193; 76) played as individuals.

UCSC plays in the American Southwest Conference Championship at The Hideout Golf Club & Resort in Brownwood, Texas, on April 24-27.

Pro baseball

de Geus DFA’d >> Right-hander pitcher Brett de Geus, 27, a former Cabrillo College star, was designated for assignment by MLB’s Miami Marlins on Sunday.

De Geus appeared in three spring training games and posted a 20.25 ERA and 4.13 WHIP. He was tagged for six hits and six runs over 2 2/3 innings. He walked five batters and struck out three.

The Marlins will have one week to either trade de Geus or attempt to pass him through waivers. If he goes through waivers unclaimed, they’ll have the opportunity to outright him to the minors as a non-roster depth option.

Boys volleyball

Surf City Invitational >> Archbishop Mitty and Granite Bay won division titles at the 16-team Surf City Invitational, hosted by Harbor, Aptos, and Soquel, over the weekend.

Archbishop Mitty beat Sanger 26-24, 25-20 in the Gold Division final at Harbor High. Santa Cruz took fourth and Harbor was fifth.

In pool play, Santa Cruz beat Del Mar (25-17, 25-20) and Granite Bay (25-20, 27-25) in the first round on Friday, and beat Hollister (25-10, 25-19) and Leland (25-19, 25-9) in the second round Saturday. The Cardinals beat Wilcox (25-14, 25-23) in the quarterfinals and lost to Sanger (25-21, 17-25, 15-13) in the semifinals.

In pool play, Harbor beat Hollister (25-11, 25-8) and Wilcox (25-13, 20-25, 15-11) in the first round on Friday, and beat Rancho San Juan (25-17, 25-12) and lost to Northgate (25-15, 25-18) in the second round on Saturday. The Pirates lost to Mitty (25-20, 25-21) in the quarterfinals.

Granite Bay beat Whitney in the 25-15, 25-19 in the Silver Division final at Aptos High. Soquel took fourth, and Aptos was sixth.

In pool play, Soquel beat Santa Clara (25-17, 25-19) and lost to Northgate (25-18, 25-9) in the first round on Friday, and lost to Mitty (25-19, 25-23) and Leigh (25-22, 22-25, 15-12) in the second round on Saturday. The Knights beat Santa Clara (25-21, 25-22) in the quarterfinals and lost to Whitney (25-21, 25-15) in the semifinals.

In pool play, Aptos lost to Leigh (25-8, 25-9) and Monterey (25-6, 25-16) in the first round on Friday, and lost to Carmel (25-16, 25-12) in the second round before winning by forfeit over Del Mar (25-1, 25-1) on Saturday. The Mariners lost to Granite Bay (25-11, 25-18) in the quarterfinals.

College baseball

Ohlone 7, Cabrillo 6; 10 inn. >> Oscar Knapp and Nic Brusca hit home runs for the Seahawks in their extra inning Coast Conference loss Saturday.

Paul Wagner singled home Tucker Biehl with the walk-off run in the 10th inning.

Adrian Castaneda had two hits and two RBI for the Seahawks (10-18, 3-6). Knapp and Truett Ross each had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored. Brusca had two RBI, and Carlos Cruz had a hit and scored twice.

Cam Hegamin had two hits, one walk, one RBI, and a run scored for the Renegades (25-4, 8-1). Brendan Comerford and Ben Johnston hit home runs.

Cabrillo hosts West Valley (23-6, 9-0), weather permitting, on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
