Ukiah rolled into Petaluma on Saturday afternoon and produced one of the biggest upsets of the season, stunning St. Vincent 27-6 and gaining a massive advantage in the Redwood Empire Conference’s Bay division title race.
The victory ends St. Vincent’s 20-game win streak, the longest in the state. The Mustangs have also lost at home twice in the past five seasons, both coming at the hands of Ukiah, and now are concerned with the status of star running back Mason Caturegli, who was injured on the third play of the game and spent the rest of it on crutches.
Both offenses stalled on their opening drives. The Wildcats (5-3, 3-0 REC-Bay) struck first on their second drive, as quarterback Beau David found Zach Martinez for a five-yard score with one minute remaining in the first quarter.
St. Vincent (7-1, 2-1) would answer almost immediately, as San Diego State commit Jack Ellis caught a nice pass from Gabe Casanovas in the front corner of the end zone. The point-after attempt was blocked, however, so Ukiah still led. That would be the only scoring of the first half.
Then the Wildcats took over on the first drive of the third quarter and never looked back. They picked off Casanovas to open the second half and turned that into seven points as David took it in himself for the score.
Ukiah got another pick on St. Vincent’s next possession but couldn’t capitalize, as the Mustangs’ defense forced a turnover on downs. St. Vincent would then be forced to punt (they had five three-and-outs on the day).
At the end of the third, it was 14-6. Ukiah then rattled off 13 points in the fourth to break the game open and ensure the victory. The highlight was David finding Dareon Dorsey for a 46-yard score.
Casa Grande 34, Tamalpais 28: The Gauchos pulled out another thrilling win in the final moments Saturday in Marin, taking down the Red-tailed Hawks on a last-minute touchdown.
Jayden Pieri hauled in the go-ahead score with 50 seconds left, a 35-yard pass from quarterback Joey Cerda to give Casa Grande (4-4, 4-0 REC-Valley) the lead for good. Jackson Drumm then sealed the win with an interception that ended the ensuing drive by Tamalpais (2-6, 2-2).
It’s the fourth straight win for the Gauchos and keeps not only their league title hopes alive but also their playoff chances.
They’d secure an automatic playoff spot by winning the REC-Valley title, which requires beating American Canyon and Petaluma to close out the season.
A win in just one of those two games would put them squarely on the bubble as an at-large bid.
The Gauchos trailed 21-12 at halftime but roared back in the fourth quarter. They cut the deficit to 28-26 with just under six minutes to play and then got the ball with 1:30 to set up the go-ahead score.
Ronan Curley led the offense with 159 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. Defensively, Rylo Wyre racked up 17 total tackles, including three for loss, while Chris Kircher tallied 11 total tackles.
Sonoma Valley 57, Archie Williams 21: The Dragons scored 23 unanswered points in the third quarter to roll past the Peregrine Falcons on the road Saturday to extend their winning streak and stay unbeaten in REC-Mountain play.
Leading just 27-21 at halftime, Sonoma Valley (7-1, 4-0) scored three touchdowns in quick succession to pull away.
Running back Cayden Waldrop had five rushing touchdowns and ran for over 300 yards on the ground, while quarterback Dalan Lopata passed for three touchdowns and had just three incompletions on the day.
Colin Buckley finished with over 150 receiving yards and a score and added an interception on defense, one of three takeaways by the Dragons’ defense. Chewy Ordaz added a pick and Luis Botello collected a pair of sacks.
Benicio Reyes and Angelo Tellez also each had a receiving touchdown.
Marin Catholic 27, Rancho Cotate 0: The Wildcats took an early lead on a pick-six and ultimately pulled away in the fourth quarter Friday night in Rohnert Park to hand the Cougars (4-4, 0-3 REC-Adobe) their fourth straight loss.
Marin Catholic (4-4, 3-0), which has won three in a row, led 12-0 at halftime and through three quarters before adding two scores early in the fourth to put the game away.
Analy 41, Montgomery 12: The Tigers (5-3, 1-2 REC-Bay) bounced back from their loss last week in a big way Friday night, beating Montgomery (0-8, 0-3) to get their first win in league play.
Clayton Graham had a monster game, hauling in three catches for 122 yards and two receiving touchdowns to go along a kick return touchdown. Brantz Jacobs had 15 carries on the ground for 128 yards and two scores as well.
Elsie Allen 34, Potter Valley: The Lobos used their defense to help pull away in the fourth quarter in an NCL III road battle with the Bearcats on Friday night.
Leading 20-18 heading to the final frame, quarterback Nicholas Vazquez Lobato scored on a short keeper to opened up a two-score lead with just over 6:30 to play before Misael Torres Sanchez got the ball back for Elsie Allen (5-3, 2-1) on an interception shortly thereafter.
Lobato then punched in another short run to cap the ensuing drive to make it 34-18 with 4:16 left.
Along with his two rushing scores, Lobato also passed for three touchdowns in the first half. He connected with Angel Iniguez for touchdown receptions of 37 and 36 yards and hit Uriel Gonzalez for a 10-yard score to take the lead with 20 seconds left in the first half.
Alexander Torres Sanchez provided a spark with a long punt return and had a key first-down conversion on fourth down in the second half.
American Canyon 50, Napa 0: The Wolves (7-1, 4-0 REC-Valley) went up 22-0 after the first quarter and never looked back as they shut out Napa (2-6, 0-4) to remain perfect in league play.
Isaac Anderson had two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter as AC broke out to a 43-0 halftime lead. They tacked on seven more points in the second half as the damage was already done.
Redwood 45, Justin-Siena 0: The Giants routed the Braves in an REC-Valley matchup Friday night to move back over .500 on the season and in league play.
It was the first game Justin-Siena (0-8, 0-5) has played since Oct. 3. The Braves forfeited their last two games due to a lack of healthy players.
Redwood (5-4, 3-0) has now won its last two games by a combined score of 87-0.
St. Helena 36, Clear Lake 7: The Saints piled up over 400 yards of offense in a runaway road victory over the Cardinals on Friday night.
Julian Earls and Jhony Covarrubias each rushed for a pair of touchdowns for St. Helena (8-0, 5-0 North Central League I), which didn’t have any players run for over 100 yards but rushed for 338 yards as a team.
The Saints led 13-0 at halftime and pulled away with two more touchdowns and a safety by Ben Brakesman to push their lead to 29-0 after three quarters.
St. Helena can clinch the NCL I title outright with a win over Willits next week.
Terra Linda 12, Piner 0: The Trojans stifled the Prospectors’ offense in a shutout Saturday in REC-Mountain play.
Stats on offense were not available for Piner (1-7, 1-3). Defensively, Lucian Wee led the way with 11 tackles, Jamos Olivos had seven and Jarod Fata had five while Soso Prak had an interception.
Swett 58, Roseland University Prep 0: RUP went down 16-0 after the first quarter and could never recover as they fell to Swett in league play Friday afternoon in Crockett.
The Knights fall to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the NCL II.
They will look to bounce back next Saturday against section powerhouse Stuart Hall (8-0, 3-0).
Willits 47, Cloverdale 0: The Eagles suffered a second consecutive loss with Friday night’s shutout by the Wolverines in Willits.
Cloverdale falls to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the NCL I. The Eagles have two games remaining in the season, next week on the road at Fort Bragg and Nov. 7 at home against Lower Lake.
South Fork 50, Calistoga 28: The Wildcats remained winless in league play with Friday night’s home loss, their third straight defeat after a three-game win streak earlier in the season.
Calistoga is 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the NCL III. The Wildcats close out the season at Elsie Allen on Thursday and as host to Round Valley on Nov. 7.
