Stanford goalkeeper Haley Craig made a pair of saves in a penalty kick shootout Sunday night, helping the Cardinal advance to the NCAA women’s soccer Elite Eight by way of a thrilling 4-2 shootout win over Arkansas.

After a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes of play in Fayetteville, Ark., Stanford (15-4-2) got penalty kick goals from Andrea Kitahata, Lumi Kostmayer, Craig and Shae Harvey, with Craig stopping Arkansas’ second and third opportunities.

The third-seeded Cardinal had a first-half goal disallowed but evened the match at 1-1 on freshman Charlotte Kohler’s laser of a strike from distance in the 56th minute.

Craig was ultimately credited with three saves in the match, including a game-saving stop of Ava Tankersley in the 105th minute to keep the match tied.

With the victory, Stanford returns home to host ACC-foe and 13th-ranked Notre Dame on Friday at 2 p.m. at Cagan Stadium. m. The Fighting Irish, a No. 4 seed, beat Stanford 3-0 in South Bend, Ind. on Oct. 20.

Memphis beats No. 2 UConn 99-97 in OT >> Tyrese Hunter scored 17 of his 26 points after halftime to lead Memphis to a 99-97 overtime win against two-time defending national champion and second-ranked UConn in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

Hunter shot 7 of 10 from 3-point range for the Tigers (5-0). Tarris Reed Jr. had 22 points for the Huskies (4-1).

Women’s basketball

UCLA No. 1 for first time in school history >> UCLA is the new No. 1 in the AP poll after a historic win that lifted the school to its first appearance in the top spot.

The Bruins knocked off South Carolina, the defending national champion that had held the top spot in the previous 23 polls, on Sunday with a 77-62 victory that snapped UCLA’s 0-20 record against No. 1 teams.

UCLA, which was No. 5 in the poll last week, earned 20 first-place votes from the 32-member national media panel. UConn remained second.

Notre Dame, which beat then-No. 3 USC, moved up to third. South Carolina dropped to fourth after its 43-game winning streak ended.

Rays to play 19 of first 22 games at home >> Major League Baseball switched a pair of series involving the Tampa Bay Rays to the first two months of the season in an attempt to avoid summer rain at open-air Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home following damage to Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay is scheduled to play 19 of its first 22 games at home and 37 of 54 through May 28, then play 64 of its last 108 games on the road.

Kikuchi gets $63M deal from Angels >> Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a $63 million, three-year contract.

An All-Star with Seattle in 2021, Kikuchi was 9-10 with a 4.05 ERA in 32 starts this year for Toronto and Houston.
