SAN JOSE — A man has been arrested on suspicion of sneaking into a downtown home, attacking a woman sleeping inside and then sexually assaulting her, police said Wednesday.
Officers were called around 2:20 a.m. May 22 for a report of a burglary and sexual assault at residence in downtown San Jose. The exact location was not specified in a San Jose Police Department news release.
An investigation determined that a man entered the home through an unlocked door, found a woman asleep in a bedroom, then covered her mouth and sexually assaulted her, police said. He then reportedly ran off.
Police said officers recognized the victim’s description of her attacker as resembling a man they encountered the night before. Detectives identified a suspect as 40-year-old San Jose resident Cong Tran. He was arrested in San Jose about 16 hours after the attack was reported.
Police said he and the woman did not know each other, and that the case is being treated as a stranger attack.
Tran was booked into the Elmwood men’s jail in Milpitas on suspicion of burglary and sexual assault, and is currently being held without bail. Prosecutors charged him Wednesday, court records show.
