When Lake Station police officers responded to a call on April 3, they found Bradley Brooks outside, armed with a black machete. He just threatened to kill his sister.
After a tense situation, an officer shot him three times with a less lethal shotgun before he was arrested.
Brooks, 29, was charged April 5 with intimidation.
He is in custody, held on a $5,000 cash bond. His next court hearing is Wednesday.
Officers began arriving at 8:40 p.m. April 3 to the 3600 block of Nevada Street for a “family disturbance,” court records show.
Two officers started talking with Brooks.
A third racked the projectile shotgun and ordered him to drop the machete.
“You think I’m afraid to … die? Put that ... thing away,” Brooks responded.
Two officers used a stun gun on Brooks to little effect.
The officer with the projectile shotgun then shot Brooks in the leg, thigh and lower abdomen, records show. Brooks fell backward and one officer turned him head away from where the machete fell as they arrested him.
Brooks’ sister told officers he got mad earlier that evening, yelling at their mother for being “nosey” and accused her of listening in as Brooks talked with his girlfriend on the phone, records show.
The sister said she intervened to make sure he wouldn’t hurt the mom.
The situation “rapidly deteriorated” when the sister accused him of leaving the back gate open, saying the dogs could have escaped.
Brooks angrily walked out the back, then was in the front yard with a machete, swinging the weapon and threatening to kill the sister. She called 911.
She argued with him while on the phone with dispatchers.
The mother said Brooks had a history of “violent” and “erratic” behavior, the affidavit notes.
He had turned “overly paranoid,” she said. The mother didn’t know where he got the machete, but noted he was a “dumpster diver.”
The sister’s friend, who was there, said she went to get her pepper spray from her car, but Brooks didn’t personally threaten her.
