A man from Laramie, Wyoming, was arrested Wednesday night for reportedly trying to stab another man with a boxcutter at the RTD bus station in downtown Boulder.

Hector Orozco, 42, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, felony menacing, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of a protection order.

He is set for a return filing of charges on Tuesday.

At 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Boulder police were dispatched to a weapons report at the Downtown Boulder RTD Station at 1400 Walnut St., according to an affidavit. Dispatch advised officers there was “a knife fight occurring in the lobby.”

Once police arrived at the bus station, they were alerted that the suspect had gotten on a bus at gate 3. Other officers who were on scene ordered all passengers to disembark from the bus and ordered two individuals matching the description of the suspect and the victim to step aside.

A man, later identified as Orozco, yelled at officers that he was the victim, according to the affidavit. In an interview with officers, Orozco “made initial statements that he observed a crazy person running around with a knife.”

According to the affidavit, he also said he ran onto the bus and the person followed him, but was unable to articulate the appearance of the person with the knife.

Police said Orozco later changed his story, saying that he was sitting on the toilet in the bathroom when a man walked in and started assaulting him, according to the affidavit. Additionally, he told officers that he was struck on the top of the head and in the stomach and was hit in the face six times.

However, police noted in the affidavit that they did not observe any injuries or marks to Orozco.

After speaking to witnesses and the other man who was reportedly involved in the incident, police learned that multiple people observed Orozco attempting to stab the other man with a yellow knife in the lobby.

The victim later told officers that he was trying to use the bathroom in the bus station and made a comment to two men who were in one stall about letting other people use the bathroom.

Orozco then told the man to leave the bathroom and when he did, he followed him out into the lobby, stating that “he better get away from him or he was going to stab him.” According to the affidavit, Orozco then produced a box cutter, but a security guard got in the middle of the two men and split them up.

The bus driver told police they observed Orozco leaving the lobby and entering the bus. The bus driver said that when Orozco overheard police sirens, he observed him throwing something under a bus seat but did not see what it was, according to the affidavit.

When officers searched the area, they found a yellow boxcutter under the seat where Orozco was sitting.

An RTD incident report was later sent to police, which contained still shots of Orozco with the yellow box cutter in his right hand “in a stabbing motion, directly in front of and towards (the victim),” according to the affidavit.

His booking photo was not immediately available.
