


Applications for environmental program available
The deadline for submitting Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) applications for 2021 projects is Jan. 15. The LARE program strives to protect and enhance habitat for fish and wildlife while ensuring the continued viability of Indiana’s publicly accessible lakes, rivers and streams through measures that reduce sediment and nutrient pollution. LARE applicants receive technical and financial assistance for qualifying projects, which include logjam removal, streambank stabilization and wetland creation. Purdue educators to offer DIY
lawn care series
Purdue Extension will offer a four-part online series of classes for those who want a greener, healthier lawn. The virtual series will be held from from 6:30 to 9 p.m. ET and from 5:30 to 8 p.m. CT on Thursdays, Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25. Topics to be covered include lawn fertilization, mowing, lawn pests, irrigation needs, weed management, lawn renovation and lawn establishment. Lake County Public Library will offer a variety of upcoming events. The Griffith Calumet branch will host Mystery Loves Company Virtual Book Chat for adults from 1 to 2 p.m. Jan. 11 via the Griffith-Calumet Branch Zoom.
