



UC Santa Cruz had four student-athletes — senior Eric Anderson, junior Graeme Maclean, and sophomores Evan Hofstetter and Kenzie Seymour — compete in the 2025 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which were held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, on Thursday through Saturday.
Anderson took sixth place in the 1,500-meter final in 3 minutes, 50.50 seconds on Saturday.
Lynchburg senior Tor Hotung-Davidsen won in 3:48.75.
Anderson took third in the first round of qualifying Thursday and advanced in 3:51.39. His personal best of 3:45.02 came earlier this season.
Maclean finished 22nd in the first round of 1,500 qualifying in 3:59.13. The top 12 advanced to the final.
Hofstetter took 12th out of 22 qualifiers in the decathlon with 6,304 points. Wisconsin-Oshkosh junior Charlie Nolan took first in five events and won the overall title with a 7,118 total.
Hofstetter’s top events included a personal best in his first-place finish in the 1,500 (4:19.25), and second-place finishes in the 100 (10.99), 400 (49.71) and long jump (22 feet, 6.25 inches).
In women’s action, Seymour, the No. 13 seed, placed 22nd in the first round of the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:53.20. The top 12 advanced to the final.
Surfing
Memorial Day Club Invitational >> Longboarders from across the state gathered in Santa Cruz to compete at the 2025 Santa Cruz Longboard Union Memorial Day Club Invitational at Steamer Lane over the weekend.
Santa Cruz Longboard Union (SCLU) took first with a total of 2,740 points. Pedro Point Surf Club (2,140) took second, and Windansea Surf Club (1,850) took third.
Big Stick Surfing Association (1,690) and Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club (1,330) rounded out the top five.
Division winners for SCLU included: London Lorber (Menehune Girls 14 and under), Zoey Howland (Junior Women 19 and under), Aylana Zanville (Masters Women 40-49), Michael Watson (Legends Men 60-69) and Richard “Frosty” Hesson (Grand Legends 70 and up).
Windansea had three division winners: Keanna Miller (Women 20-29), Gia Gretchen Bach (Grand Masters Women 50-59), and Miranda Joseph (Legends Women 60-69).
Big Stick Surfing Association had Conner Curley (Menehune Boys 14 and under) and Tony Brigante (Masters Men 40-49) take first place.
Other division winners included: Hope Ranch Surf Club’s Harper King (Junior Men 19 and under), Swamis Surfing Association’s Adam Reppenhagen (Men 20-29), San Onofre Surf Club’s Travis Zylstra (Grand Masters Men 50-59), Pedro Point Surf Club’s Brooke Velasquez (Senior Women 30-39), and Pacific Beach Surf Club’s Nico Espinosa (Senior Men 30-39).
SCLU’s Leechy Surfboards took first in the Shapers Showcase.
Women’s volleyball
2025 recruiting class >> UCSC announced the five student-athletes who make up its 2025 recruiting class, the first under first-year head coach Chad Koenegstein, on Instagram. The incoming batch of freshmen talent includes three players from California, including two from the Bay Area, and two from the East Coast.
The class features Madeline Marshall, a 6-foot-1 middle hitter out of University Prep Academy in San Jose and Mountain View Volleyball Club; Ashlyn Victa, a 5-2 libero out of Northgate High in Walnut Creek and Bay Area Volleyball Club in Concord; Mia Ngo, a 6-2 outside hitter/middle blocker/oppposite out of Pitman High in Turlock and a member of Rage Volleyball Club in Ripon; Shiraz Benyoucef, a 5-8 libero out of Georgetown Day High in of Washington, D.C., and a member of Paramount Volleyball Club in Manassas, Virginia; and Charlotte Skulte, a 6-2 middle blocker out of Bishop Feehan High in Attleboro, Massaschusetts, and a member of CMass Edge Juniors Volleyball Club in Marlboro, Massachusetts.
UCSC went 16-14 overall in 2024. The Banana Slugs posted a 3-0 sweep of University of Mary Washington in the third-place match at the Coast-To-Coast Conference Tournament to end their season Nov. 16.
Golf
Holes-in-one >> Two golfers earned hole-in-ones at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz over the weekend.
Santa Cruz’s Korsen Yu aced the 158-yard eighth hole with a 6-iron on Friday for his fourth career ace.
San Jose’s John Albers earned his first career ace on Saturday. He drained his tee shot on the 208-yard third hole with a 3-wood.
Beach volleyball
No Attitudes >> Santa Cruz’s Trevor Adcock and Arno Rogg took first in the men’s division at the No Attitudes tournament at Main Beach on May 17.
Mary Chua and Ko Hu of San Mateo took first in the women’s division; Brielle Curtis of Santa Cruz and Billy Luu of Berkeley took first in the coed Intermediate division; and Leo Hashiguchi-Rosoff of Scotts Valley and Diego Guzman of Santa Cruz took first in the teen division.
