Novato High junior heavyweight Braeden Carroll went 4-1 to finish second at 287 pounds in the North Coast Section boys wrestling championship in Union City on Saturday. The top two placers advance to the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield, where Carroll, who is ranked 14th in the state, is expected to be among the top challengers. The championships begin Thursday.

Carroll (36-5) won three matches by pinfall, and one by decision, to earn his berth in the NCS championship showdown. Carroll, the MCAL champion, lost by technical fall to Livermore seniors Asher Nischke (38-2).

Redwood High sophomore Dylan Morton (128) placed sixth, while Giants junior Jackson Heravi (152) took seventh.

Girls wrestling

Archie Williams junior Sofia De Jesus stood on the podium at the end of Saturday’s North Coast Section girls championships at Albany High. De Jesus, ranked ninth in the state, earned a major decision over Liberty junior Jaevani Persaud to capture third place in the 110-pound field. The top three placers advance to the State girls championships.

Terra Linda senior Olivia Zabierek finished eighth at 110 pounds. San Marin sophomore Catania Dekeyrel took fourth place at 140 pounds, while Mustangs senior Yuritzi Sanchez Zapata (170) claimed fifth place. Novato senior Mercedes Garcia placed seventh at 130 pounds.

Boys basketball

After a nip-and-tuck first half, Marin Catholic beat No. 14 Heritage, 71-60, in Saturday’s NCS Division II quarterfinal. The 11th-ranked Wildcats (16-14) will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between No. 2 Cardinal Newman and No. 7 Lick-Wilmerding on Wednesday.

Prep track and field

Marin County’s high school athletes opened the season with record-breaking performances from Archie Williams and Tam competitors at the Skyline Invitational in Oakland on Saturday.

Archie Williams High junior Ani Stieg won 1,600 in 5 minutes, 2.91 seconds, breaking the previous meet record set in 2015. In the girls 4 x 800, the Peregrine Falcons team of Stieg, Alyssa Silverstein, Brook Lee and Sloane Korty set a meet record of 10:04.13 to claim first place.

Tam High senior Will Freas cleared the bar at 14 feet, 6 inches on his first try in the boys pole vault, breaking the old record by a foot, on his way to a first-place finish. Senior Kendra Evans cleared 8-6 to win the girls pole vault.

Red-tailed Hawks sophomores Sam Newmeyer and Sullivan Gillmore both cleared 5-10 to place fourth and fifth, respectively, in the high jump. Hawks senior Natalie Popper ran 53.66 senior in the 300 meter hurdles to place third overall. Tam sophomore Johanna Friedrichsdorf took seventh overall in the girls 200, with a time of 26.88.

Prep baseball

Tam High opened the season with an 11-0 road win over De Anza on Saturday in explosive fashion as the Red-tailed Hawks scored five runs each in the first and second innings. Henry Stoll hit an RBI double for the Hawks.

• San Rafael surrendered two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as host Maria Carrillo edged the Bulldogs, 9-8, in Saturday’s season debut. Senior Dexter Jackson was 2-for-2, with two runs and three RBIs for the Bulldogs. Senior Cruz Wexler scored three runs and drove in another on a pair of hits for San Rafael. Noah Shapiro and Colby Jackson each had two RBIs.

• Redwood High shut out Berean Christian, 14-0, in Saturday’s season opener.

Prep mountain biking

Dylan Nofziger claimed fourth place in the boys varsity race in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 52.97 seconds to lead Redwood High to the overall team title in the season-opening race at Fort Ord on Saturday.

San Marin’s Te’Ah Hirschfeld (1:15:31.06) placed ninth, while the Archie Williams duo of Dylan Donner (1:16:49.87) and Liam Rosenbaum (1:17:40.85) finished 15th and 17th, respectively. San Domenico’s Jake McDonnell (1:18:20.98) took 19th overall, just ahead of Redwood’s Dylan Corteville (1:18:29.55).

Tam’s Johannah Nesbit (1:2726.16) placed fourth in the girls varsity race, followed by the Giants’ Charlotte Philkill (1:32:42.65) and Ava Scott (1:33:00.84) in seventh and eighth, respectively. Tam’s Jo Moore (1:36:40.08) took ninth place.

Women’s basketball

Redwood High grad Kylie Horstmeyer scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for San Diego in Saturday’s 64-51 road loss to Oregon State. Hostmeyer will be among the honorees as the Toreros (6-21) celebrate Senior Night during Thursday’s contest against Loyola Marymount.

Women’s golf

The Meadow Club in Fairfax will play host to the Juli Inkster intercollegiate tournament, March 3-4. The 54-hole team and individual college women’s tournament is hosted by the University of San Francisco.
