Dawson Garcia, who led the Gophers’ men’s basketball team in scoring and rebounding for the past three seasons, has signed a free-agent deal with the Detroit Pistons and will play in the NBA 2K26 Summer League.

A 6-foot-11 forward from Savage who played high school basketball at Prior Lake, Garcia was a second-team all-Big Ten selection last season after averaging 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds a game.

The 30-team NBA 2K26 Summer League is scheduled for July 10-20 in Las Vegas at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center and Pavilion.

Frost re-sign playoff hero Knoll to 1-year deal

The Frost on Friday announced the team has re-signed forward Katy Knoll to a one-year contract.

Knoll, 24, had a goal and assist in 21 regular-season games as a rookie last year. In eight playoff games, she had two goals and three assists and scored in triple overtime to give the Frost a 2-1 series lead against Ottawa.

Minnesota went on to win its second Walter Cup in as many seasons.

“I am so excited to be returning to the Frost next season and continue to build off of the great success the team has had the last two years,” Knoll said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the fans and getting back to work with the team in the fall.”

Knoll is the fifth player to re-sign with Minnesota this offseason, joining forward Claire Butorac, defenders Mae Batherson and Natalie Buchbinder, and goaltender Maddie Rooney.

Bennett, Tavares, Frederic opt to re-sign

Before Friday’s NHL draft started, several players decided to stay with their current teams.

Sam Bennett — who led the NHL with 15 goals in this year’s playoffs and became the first Florida Panthers player ever to score that many in a single postseason — is staying with the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions. He and Florida agreed Friday to a new eight-year contract worth $64 million, or $8 million per season.

John Tavares re-signed for four more years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, getting $17.55 million. He’ll count $4.39 million against the salary cap through the 2028-29 season after that number was $11 million annually on his previous deal.

The Edmonton Oilers finalized an eight-year, $30.8 million. contract with big winger Trent Frederic, who they got at the trade deadline from Boston.

Coyle, Wood traded; Dobson goes to Montreal

Colorado traded a pair of forwards on Friday, sending Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood to Columbus for the 77th pick in this year’s draft, a conditional second-rounder in 2027 and prospect Gavin Brindley.

The Blue Jackets improved their depth up front after missing out on getting defenseman Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders.

Dobson went instead in a sign-and-trade to the Montreal Canadiens for the 16th and 17th picks in the draft Friday night and forward Emil Heineman. Dobson got $76 million over eight years, a cap hit of $9.5 million.

Edouard Julien’s RBI single in the ninth inning finished the St. Paul Saints’ comeback in a 6-5, walk-off win against Louisville on Friday at CHS Field.

Julien entered the day with a 1.006 OPS in 22 June games.

49ers cornerback Lenoir arrested in Los Angeles

San Francisco 49ers player Deommodore Lenoir was arrested in Los Angeles on a charge of obstructing law enforcement and later released Friday, police said.

Los Angeles police said they saw multiple double-parked cars blocking traffic at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday. They said a suspect “appearing to conceal contraband” threw the keys to one of the cars to Lenoir, who refused to give them to officers.

Officers eventually recovered a gun and narcotics in one of the cars. Lenoir, 25, was arrested and booked on a charge of delaying and resisting a peace officer.

According to the county jail inmate information center, Lenoir was released around 1 a.m. Friday and is due to appear in court July 25.

Cink, Harrington, Hensby tied for Senior Open lead

Padraig Harrington and Stewart Cink endured the ups and downs of the U.S. Senior Open together for a second straight day Friday and found themselves tied for the lead.

Cink made up five shots over the final nine holes of his head-to-head pairing against Harrington, and the players headed into the weekend tied at 6-under 134, along with late-charging Mark Hensby.

Hensby shot his second straight round of 3-under 67, finishing the day with his 14th and 15th birdies of the tournament.

Knapp shoots 61 but not in lead at Rocket Classic

Jake Knapp has pulled off a feat no one else has in PGA Tour history.

Knapp shot an 11-under 61 on Friday to break a Rocket Classic record that stood for less than a day and became the first on the tour to break 60 and shoot a 61 or lower in the same season.

That still wasn’t enough to put him in the top six at Detroit Golf Club.

Chris Kirk (65), Philip Knowles (64) and Andrew Putnam (66) share the second-round lead at 14 under.
