Conservative lawmaker proposes state abortion ban

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana Republican lawmaker said he will propose legislation next year that effectively would ban abortion in the state, despite a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that established a nationwide right to abortion.

State Rep. Curt Nisly, of Goshen, said he'll sponsor the bill when the legislature meets in January.

Abortion-rights groups are certain to oppose the measure, and it is doubtful that it will advance in the Statehouse.

But anti-abortion groups are emboldened by Donald Trump's election and hope the Republican president-elect will appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade.

Social conservative activist Monica Boyer said now is the time to push for legislation like Nisly's. She and other abortion opponents hope a legal challenge would reach the nation's highest court.

Sheriff: Woman confesses to killing her 2 children

DARLINGTON, Ind. — A sheriff said an Indiana woman killed her two young children then stabbed herself in the neck a day after her husband filed for divorce.

Montgomery County Sheriff Mark Casteel said Brandi Worley, 30, of Darlington confessed to the killings in a 911 call about 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Casteel said she showed no remorse during her confession.

Casteel said a deputy found Tyler Worley, 7, and Charlie Worley, 3, dead in a bedroom. No information has been released on how they died. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The sheriff said their father, Jason Worley, was asleep in the basement, unaware of what was happening in the home.

A hospital is treating Brandi Worley for injuries to her neck.

Jury acquits 2 Indianapolis officers of beating veteran

INDIANAPOLIS — A jury has acquitted two Indianapolis police officers of battery after they allegedly assaulted a veteran, leaving him unconscious outside a bar.

The jury found John Serban, 42, and Michael Reiger, 48, not guilty Wednesday.

Court documents say security camera video shows the off-duty officers beating Air Force veteran Bradford Bohanon, 29. The man argued with a bartender over his tab, and when Serban told him to leave, Bohanon grabbed the officer's badge and threw it. The video shows Serban putting Bohanon in a chokehold for nearly a minute.

During the trial that began Monday, defense attorneys said the officers acted in self-defense to bring Bohanon under control and defuse the situation. The officers have been suspended without pay, pending a recommendation of termination to the Civilian Police Merit Board.
