


Tiger Woods withdraws from signature event as he processes mother’s death
SAN DIEGO>> Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Genesis Invitational. He says he planned to play and tried to get ready but is still processing the death of his mother. Kultida Woods died unexpectedly last week.
Woods says he hopes to be at Torrey Pines later in the week. He is the tournament host of this $20 million signature event that benefits his foundation.
The tournament is held annually at Riviera. But it had to relocated to Torrey Pines because of the deadly LA wildfires.
Warriors’ Kuminga likely to remain out for first few games after All-Star break
MILWAUKEE>> Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga is making progress from his sprained right ankle but won’t be ready to return immediately after the All-Star break. Kuminga last played in a game on Jan. 4.
The Warriors announced that he has started working out on the court and will be evaluated again in 10 days.
The 6-foot-7 forward is expected to start participating in team practices after the All-Star break. The All-Star Game is Sunday in San Francisco.
Timberwolves sale back on track after latest ruling
MINNEAPOLIS>> The ownership transfer of the Minnesota Timberwolves must continue as originally planned. An arbitration panel has ruled that controlling owner Glen Taylor must cede control of the NBA club to partners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez in the disputed final phase of the sale.
The $1.5 billion transaction was uniquely arranged three years ago to give Lore and Rodriguez the majority stake. Lore and Rodriguez, the former baseball star, announced that their timeline for obtaining league approval of the acquisition has not expired..
Clippers sign Simmons in latest change of scenery for injury-plagued top pick
INGLEWOOD, Calif. >> The Los Angeles Clippers have signed Ben Simmons, adding a former No. 1 overall pick who struggled to stay healthy and productive during 2 1/2 seasons with the Brooklyn Nets.
The 28-year-old Simmons joins a veteran squad led by Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Norman Powell.
The Clippers entered Monday seventh in the Western Conference standings. Simmons was waived by the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday, with the sides agreeing to a buyout of his contract.
Sabathia to have Yankees logo on Hall of Fame plaque
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. >> CC Sabathia will have a New York Yankees logo on the cap of his Hall of Fame plaque and Billy Wagner will have the symbol of the Houston Astros. The hall announced the decisions for all five inductees.
Ichiro Suzuki will have the cap of the Seattle Mariners, Dave Parker of Pittsburgh Pirates and Dick Allen of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Former Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel nominated as Ohio’s lieutenant governor
COLUMBUS, Ohio>> Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is nominating former Ohio State Buckeyes football coach Jim Tressel as the state’s next lieutenant governor. Tressel retired a year and a half ago as president of Youngstown State.
Tressel would succeed Jon Husted, whom DeWine recently tapped to fill the U.S. Senate seat left open by JD Vance’s election as vice president.
